#SDCC: ‘Avengers’ cast together for the first time

Newly-installed Avengers director Joss Whedon took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to make the much-applauded formal announcement of who will be playing Marvel’s mightiest heroes.

Returning Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey, Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Clark Gregg, will be reprising their roles as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Agent Phil Coulson respectively, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America (in The Avengers and Captain America: The First Avenger both), Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and the newly cast Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk.

It’s certainly an accomplished cast, despite the apparent lack of the Wasp, and the star power coming off Bleeding Cool‘s photo is almost tangible.

“I’ve had a dream all my life, and it was not this good,” Whedon said at the panel. “This cast is more than I could ever dream of working with, and I am going to blow it.”

(Not pictured: Nathan Fillion as Ant-Man. It’s not happening. Get over it.)

#SDCC: The Joss Whedon Experience – UPDATED

I don’t think we really need to introduce Joss Whedon. But just in case, he’s the creator of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, and Firefly – not to mention that just yesterday he officially became director of Marvel’s The Avengers.  He took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con today for the “Joss Whedon Experience,” where thousands of his closest friends gathered to ask him questions without even a moderator between them. Thanks to Marisa Roffman over at Give Me My Remote and her live coverage of the panel, here are some highlights after the jump… and thanks to ecsmith34, we’re getting video.

Joss Whedon to direct the ‘Avengers’ movie?

Joss Whedon to direct the ‘Avengers’ movie?

That’s what Entertainment Weekly is hinting at.

As usual, I’ll believe it when I see much more confirmation, as I’m still old enough to remember when Joss was supposed to direct Wonder Woman.

On the other hand, I’m sure he’d pass muster with Marvel’s crew pretty quickly, and Joss is known for doing well with keeping things under budget, which is always important, particularly with Marvel Studios known tendencies towards penny pinching.

Fox Cancels ‘Dollhouse’

Fox Cancels ‘Dollhouse’

The mixed reviews and poor ratings have led Fox to formally cancel Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse.

The second season show, starring and co-produced by Eliza Dushku, is currently on a planned hiatus, keeping it from the harsh glare of the November Sweeps ratings period.

The announced plan has the final episodes broadcast on these dates: two episodes each will air December 4, 11 and 18, from 8 pm to 10 p.m. The last three episodes will air on January 8, 15 and 22 at 9 p.m.

Whedon has been given sufficient notice so the final episodes will wrap up the existing storylines. Summer Glau was recently added to the cast and will play a pivotal role with her knowledge of someone’s past life.

A second season DVD set is expected but no date has been announced.

This marks the second failed series Whedon has produced for Fox, after Firefly. He has yet to issue a formal statement but no doubt it will be heartfelt and entertaining. Meantime, Whedon is also prepping to direct at least one episode of the network’s hit series Glee.

Rights to ‘Terminator’ franchise up for auction, and Joss Whedon starts the bidding

Rights to ‘Terminator’ franchise up for auction, and Joss Whedon starts the bidding

Nikki Finke points to a piece by Financial Times‘ Matthew Garrahan which tells us the Terminator franchise is going to be auctioned off this month. All the big studios, with Sony leading the way, as well as Summit
Entertainment and Media Rights Capital, are interested in bidding. The rights auction is for new Terminator films, TV programs, comics and any other spin-offs that build on the popularity of the franchise. The sale is being conducted by FTI Capital Advisors for Halcyon which
bought the Terminator rights two years ago for $25 million from Mario
Kassar. Halcyon recently filed for Chapter 11 after a dispute with
Pacificor, a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund that lent Halcyon the sum
to buy the Terminator rights.

And who’s the opening bidder? Why, none other than Joss Whedon:

I have heard through the ‘grapevine’ that the Terminator
franchise is for sale, and I am prepared to make a pre-emptive bid
RIGHT NOW to wrap this dealio up. This is not a joke, this is not a
scam, this is not available on TV. I will write a check TODAY for
$10,000, and viola! Terminator off your hands.

No, you didn’t miscount. That’s four — FOUR! — zeroes after that
one. That’s to show you I mean business. And I mean show business.
Nikki Finke says the Terminator concept is played. Well,
here’s what I have to say to Nikki Finke: you are a fine journalist and
please don’t ever notice me. The Terminator story is as
formative and important in our culture — and my pretend play — as any
I can think of. It’s far from over. And before you Terminator-Owners
(I have trouble remembering names) rush to cash that sweet cheque, let
me give you a taste of what I could do with that franchise…

My theory: he wants to make sure The Sarah Connor Chronicles is well and truly dead and no threat to Dollhouse:

Whedon’s ‘Cabin’ Delayed a Year for 3-D Conversion

Whedon’s ‘Cabin’ Delayed a Year for 3-D Conversion

With 3-D all the rage, MGM announced over the weekend that Joss Whedon’s original thriller, The Cabin in the Woods, will be delayed from February 5 2010 to January 14 2011 to allow it to be upgraded to a three-dimensional chiller.

According to Shock Til You Drop, the film, co-written and directed by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), will require six months for the conversion. The movie stars Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Richard Jennings (Burn After Reading), Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), and Whedon regulars Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse) and Tom Lenk (Buffy)

ComicMix Quick Picks – February 2, 2009

* the. Speak-er is shaped like a cartoon speech bubble. Of course, if it was a speech bubble, it would have speech recognition to render text on the fly. If it was really cool, it would look like John Workman lettering.

* ICv2 – First Second to Publish Scott McCloud. "First Second Books has announced that it will publish two upcoming works by Scott McCloud, the multiple award-winning author of Zot, Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics, and Making Comics.  First Second plans to publish a McCloud-penned fictional graphic novel, tentatively entitled The Sculptor, in the spring of 2013 followed by a non-fiction work."

* Val Kilmer to be king of Bacchus in New Orleans parade.

* Aaaah! Zombie filking… wait, I’m being redundant.

* More NYCC stuff: ICv2 says Joss Whedon will preview ‘Dollhouse’ at 12:45pm (EST) on Sunday, February 8th at the IGN Theater. Whedon will then conduct an autograph session starting at 2pm.

* The NYCC Indie After Party. I’ll be there… I’ll probably need the drink.
