John Ostrander Benefit raises over $31,000, and counting…

“The Comix4Sight.com benefit for comics veteran John Ostrander has raised $31,322.00 thus far,” committee co-chairperson Mike Gold revealed today. “And we still have more than 100 great pieces of original art, signed books and prints, and manuscripts to auction off!”

“Contributions are continuing to pour in, even after the benefit at the Chicago Comic-Con,” program coordinator Adriane Nash stated. “In the past several days, we’ve received material from Paul Gulacy, Jason Owen, golden age great Fran Matera, the cast of The Simpsons, and so much more.”

“The auction held last week at the Chicago Comic-Con raised half the current total in about two hours,” Nash continued. “We wouldn’t have had time to present everything if we had all night.

“Details about the upcoming auctions, including a full schedule of sales, will be posted online at www.comix4sight.com beginning Wednesday August 19th. As we’ve stated, we will donate any excess revenue to other comics professionals suffering from major vision issues or to The Hero Initiative, whose help and assistance has been critical to our success,” Nash concluded.

A 27-year veteran of the comics field, Ostrander is undergoing a series of operations and medical treatments to fight off blindness and glaucoma. “The response from the entire comics community has been overwhelming,” Gold noted. “The cost of these John’s procedures has been through the roof and are only partially covered by insurance.”

The Comix4Sight.com committee includes Nash, Gold, writer Gail Simone, and getthepointradio.com’s Mike and Kai Raub. Auctioneers included WGN-AM radio news director Charlie Meyerson, artist Hilary Barta, comics/movie attorney Ken Levin, and yours truly. Monetary contributions are also gratefully accepted by check or through PayPal at Comix4Sight.com. Individuals and corporations interested in making contributions should send them to:

Comic stores donating Spider-Man/Obama profits to charity

Comic stores donating Spider-Man/Obama profits to charity

In the spirit of coming together, a number of stores are taking Amazing Spider-Man #583, featuring Spider-Man meeting Barack Obama, a comic that they know they’re going to sell out of when it goes on sale today, and are using the money to help others.

Green Brain Comics in Dearborn, Michigan has announced that they’re donating money from the sales to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Wonderworld Comics in Taylor, Michigan is offering a variety of deals: buy a store gift certificate for $100, for example, and get the Obama Spider-Man issue for free. Wonderworld is donating some proceeds to the Hero Initiative.

We think this should be encouraged, so if you are running any such benefits, or if you hear of any of them, send a quick note to us here, or post it in the comments, and we’ll update this entry to include it. (Hat tip: Patricia Montemurri, Detroit Free Press.)

DDP to Aid Josh Medors’ Cancer Battle

DDP to Aid Josh Medors’ Cancer Battle

Devil’s Due Publishing announced that it would partner with Hypergraphia Comics, the American Cancer Society and the Hero Initiative to assist comic artist Josh Medors’ fight against cancer.  Hypergraphia will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sales of their graphic novel, Sabbath: All Your Sins Reborn, to the Hero Initiative, to be used directly in Medors’ battle with spinal cancer.

Devil’s Due and Hypergraphia Comics will also host a special evening at The Bean Post Pub in Brooklyn to raise additional funds for Medors’ medical expenses.  The benefit event will take place Saturday October 4, from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Medors, well-known for his art in the Sabbath series, has fought cancer since the beginning of the Sabbath line.  Sabbath: All Your Sins Reborn is a special edition collection of the Matt Tomao/Josh Medors horror title, Pogrom.

“We are thankful for the support of Devil’s Due and Hypergraphia,” said Tomao in a release. “They have really extended a kind hand to help Josh in his battle and gone above and beyond, a true testament to their friendship.”

The Bean Post Pub is located at 7525 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn. For more information or to make a donation to Josh Medors, please visit Devil’s Due Publishing or the Hero Initiative.

Comics gives back

Comics gives back

Comics folk are known for their generosity  year-round but, as the seasons turn and the nights turn colder, the spirit of giving seems to kick into overdrive.

Out in Portland, OR, Floating World Comics is all set to hold their Spacenight tribute to Bill Mantlo on Friday, December 6 (coincidentally, the birthdays of at least four comic book creators of which I know).  As many people are aware, in 1992 the longtime Marvel mainstay was struck by a hit-and-run driver and suffered a closed-head traumatic brain injury from which he has never recovered, so as you can imagine the medical bills are formidable. If you can’t make it out to Oregon, you can always donate to the Spacenite – Bill Mantlo Fund via the above link.  The Oregonian has more information about the event.  And of course you can still order Mantlo: A Life in Comics from David Yurkovich’s Sleeping Giant Comics.

And the Hero Initiative blog features a very touching story about the latest recipients of that organization’s largesse.  As Laura Gjovaag says, read the whole thing including the comments, "Then go to CBGXtra.com and click on the banner ad to donate a dime to HERO."  Or more, if you can spare it!

Mike Wieringo update

Mike Wieringo update

To begin, the funeral arrangements from Mike’s brother Matt, reprinted in its entirety:

First, let me thank everyone who has expressed their condolences online and over the phone. We have been, frankly, overwhelmed by all the good will from all over the world. I don’t think our parents fully understood (nor did Mike) just how much he was loved and admired. To get us through this, my wife and I have spent a couple of sleepless nights reading the postings here and at Newsarama (thank you, Matt Brady) and the John Byrne Forum and it’s helped a great deal. Most touching of all was Cully Hamner’s heartfelt eulogy at Newsarama. Thank you so much, Cully. You are a beautiful man.

Now to the hard part. Mike will have two funeral services.

First, there will be a public viewing this Friday (August 17th) from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service at 1113 West Main Street in Durham, NC, followed by a chapel service at 2:00. This will be open to any of Mike’s friends and colleagues who’d like to attend. Please come prepared to share a Mike story. I plan on putting you on the spot. It would really help our Mom and Dad through this.

Second, at a time to be determined, there will be a private service for Mike’s family in Lynchburg, where we grew up.

As mentioned before, in lieu of flowers, if you’d like please send donations to the A.S.P.C.A. (aspca.org) or to the Hero Initiative (heroinitiative.org). I had previously mentioned the CBLDF but, having time to think about it, I realized that the Hero Initiative was more Mike’s style. Those wishing to contribute to the CBLDF anyway, please feel free as it’s a worthwhile cause as well.

Finally, some of you have expressed concern over what would become of Mike’s little buddy and constant companion, his cat Charlie. Well, breathe easy. Charlie is coming to live with us in Richmond with our other cat Toonces. I’m not sure how Toonces is going to take to living with the little dynamo that is Charlie, but family is family. Charlie is doing well but obviously misses Mike. He’s been sleeping on Mike’s bed and under his drawing table but he’s active and friendly.

Take care, everyone and, on behalf of our parents, my wife and me, thanks for everything. –Matt

Shooting pool with Paul Jenkins in Chicago

Shooting pool with Paul Jenkins in Chicago

In the back of Wizard World’s Chicago convention program was a full page ad featuring Paul Jenkins. It read:

This man is here to take your money! He is Paul Jenkins. Some call him a comic writer. You will call him "master." He is shooting pool at the Hero Initiative booth, #140. You can challenge him for $30, and possibly win fabulous prizes. But you will not win fabulous prizes. Because Paul will beat you. No, "beat" is not the correct word. He will destroy you, humiliate you, and debase you. He will leave you a broken shell of a man, woman, or whatever vaguely walking-erect mammal you purport to be. Paul Jenkins owns you. You just don’t know it yet.

How could I resist that? My ComicMix crew got their camera ready and I paid my $30.

WW-CHICAGO: Paul Jenkins, pool shark

WW-CHICAGO: Paul Jenkins, pool shark

My mama told me never to play pool against someone who brings his own cue. I shudder to think what she’d say about someone who brought his own pool table.

Paul Jenkins (The Sentry, Wolverine, The Darkness) is shooting pool at the Hero Initiative booth (#140) at $30 a game, 8-ball or 9-ball. If you win, you get prizes. That’s if you win. So far, I haven’t seen anybody do that. I suppose it’s possible, I mean, he has missed shots, and I wasn’t there all day, and they do have prizes there, just in case, but…

Well, it’s for a good cause. So if you lose, you can say that you planned to lose, to maximize your donation.

Yeah, right.
