Reminder: The Harvey Awards Nomination Ballots Are Due Today– er, In A Week!

The Harvey AwardsThe Harvey Awards, named in honor of the late great comics pioneer Harvey Kurtzman, recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art.

The Harvey Awards will be presented on August 20th, 2011 in Baltimore as part of the Baltimore Comic-Con. Scott Kurtz (pvponline.com) is returning for his third consecutive year as The Master of Ceremonies for the awards dinner and presentation.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators – those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. The Harvey Awards are the only industry award both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

But it only works if you participate. So get those nomination ballots in now!

(UPDATE: Okay, I jumped the gun by a week. But it got you to go put yours in, didn’t it? You did, right? Oh, come on…)

What did Mark Waid REALLY say at the Harvey Awards? Listen for yourself!

What did Mark Waid REALLY say at the Harvey Awards? Listen for yourself!

It’s already become a bit legendary this week– the self-described “long vodka-fueled rant” that Mark Waid delivered as the keynote speech at the Harvey Awards. However, unless you were one of the two hundred or so people in the room, you didn’t actually hear his speech. You might have read the speech Mark intended to give, but Mark himself said he almost immediately went off his notes.

So what was actually said? And was there really booing from some audience members?

Now you can listen for yourself. After a brief intro by Scott Kurtz, we have the full speech from Mark Waid here, as caught by Phil Merkel.

And after you’ve heard it, discuss what he had to say about publishing, filesharing, and making a living in the future in the comments.

EZ Street trailer from San Diego

EZ Street trailer from San Diego

A lot of folks asked about the trailer we were showing at the booth at San Diego for EZ Street, so we’re posting it for everyone who couldn’t make it this year– or who couldn’t hear it over the crowds.

This is also a good place to remind people that EZ Street is nominated for the Harvey Awards this year, and that the deadline is this Friday. So if you’re a comics pro who’s eligible to vote and hasn’t yet, we’d like to remind you to vote and to keep EZ Street in mind when filling out your ballot.

Webcomic News Roundup: Penny Arcade, EZ Street and Election ’08

It’s that day of the week again, folks — the one where I hastily cobble together a bunch of posts to run this weekend while hoping no one notices that I kicked off my own “Happy Hour” several hours earlier. Oh, and it’s also the day when I wrangle a few items of note for you to take notice of from the online side of the comics scene, too.

This week, the Penny Arcade duo notified readers that their corner of the InterWebs was recently named one of Time magazine’s “50 Greatest Websites of 2008.” You can also vote for which of the 50 sites is ranked #1 — so consider this some encouragement to stuff the holy heck out of that ballot. Go ahead and make your webcomic-reading vote count, choose or die, or just rock the vote. Whatever works.

Since it’s an Election Year here in the U.S., another item of note on the voting side of things: Not only did our very own EZ Street series wrap up its 38-issue run this week, but it was also nominated for a Harvey Award as “Best Online Comic.” Congratulations to creators Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley, who were recently interviewed by Scoop about the finale of the series and their future plans. Keep an eye out this week for a Q&A with the EZ Street team here on ComicMix.
