BBC News is reporting that a "hacker" calling himself Gabriel has posted the ending of the last Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, on his website.  Thoughtfully, the BBC does not provide a link.

The book is due in stores on July 21.  Author J. K. Rowling has said that two characters will die in the book.  She also said, "There will always be sad individuals who get their kicks from ruining other people’s fun."  She said she hoped,that her readers would "embark on the last adventure they will share with [Harry] without knowing where they are they going."

As an old hippie and a knitter, I’d agree that it’s the journey, not the destination, that’s most important.

Nikki Finke reports that Warner Bros Entertainment and Universal Orlando Resort are teming up to bring "The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter" to Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park in late 2009. The pair of studios are partnering to "create the world’s first fully immersive Harry Potter themed environment" envisioned as a "theme park within a theme park".

Today, Scholastic announced a contest to celebrate the publicationof the seventh — and last — Harry Potter book.  Seven US fans will be selected to win a great prize — round-trip airfare for two to London, three nights there in a hotel, and a seat at the midnight launch of the book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with a reading by author J. K. Rowling.

You have to be younger than 21 to enter. 

The "Moonlight Signing" takes place at the Natural HIstory Museum.  Only 1700 fans will be allowed to attend the signing.  The contest winners will be among the 500 people allowed to attend the reading.

Remember that Batman musical we were all dreading a couple years ago? The one with Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater dancing in the dark in full costume? Well, the good news is, that ain’t happening.

However, your friendly neighborhood webslinger will be swooping down on Broadway – and, if successful, theaters all over the Real Universe. It’ll be directed by The Lion King‘s own Julie Taymor (that’s The Lion King on Broadway, not to be confused with the even stupider Tarzan on Broadway) and the music will be provided by … wait for it … Bono and The Edge.

No first-night date has been announced, but I’m sure American Idol wannabees are scouring the trades for casting calls.  However, if you can’t wait for Spider-Man The Musical, perhaps a naked Harry Potter will do, as, according to Playbill, the London show is headed for Broadway after its June closing. Hmmm… just in time for the new book. That should scare the horses!

According to the Manchester Evening News, Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Heroes, The Second Coming) is set to star in a theatrical adaptation of Susan Cooper’s Young Adult novel The Dark Is Rising.

Eccleston will play the main villain, the Rider, who leads the evil forces back and forth through time, in what are described as Harry Potter-style films. The five books in Cooper’s series are optioned and will be produced, depending on the performance of the first film.

Ian McShane (Deadwood) co-stars with Eccleston, for director David L. Cunningham. The Dark Is Rising is set for a September 28th release.

The last time Harry Potter headed out to the bookstores, he brought 10,800,000 books with him. Today, he’s older and stronger and can carry an unprecedented 12,000,000 copies of his latest, and last, thriller.

So if you’re investing in first editions, you can skip double-bagging Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The promotion theme wil be "There Will Soon Be 7," although a great many fans believe that by the end of this final volume, we won’t have Harry Potter to kick around anymore.

The fan mentality is often a wonder to behold. It’s a constant double-edged sword. On the one hand, you have a passion for the subject matter that often knows no bounds. On the other, you often find a complete disregard for the minds behind the creation of that subject matter.

Never is this more apparent than with comic book readers, and particularly those readers who decide to review the books. With other forms of entertainment, it’s all but impossible to ignore the performers. You couldn’t discuss Buffy without mentioning the actors or Joss Whedon. It’s difficult to review a Harry Potter book without acknowledging that it’s all from the mind of JK Rowling (or a Harry Potter movie that doesn’t talk about Daniel Radcliffe & co.). So why do so many comic book reviewers have no compunction whatsoever about going on at length about the storylines and characters while completely ignoring that these fictional entities have no independent existence outside of the writers and artists who create them?

British auctioneer Bonhams is holding a massive auction of what is believed to be the UK’s largest collection of film and television costumes on March 6th. The collection comes from Angels The Costumiers, a fifth generation family firm that has been doing costumes since 1840 and worked on 26 movies that have won Oscars for Outstanding Achievement In Costume Design.

Items going under the hammer include costumes from Superman, Supergirl, six of the Doctors from Dr. Who, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Highlander, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, James Bond’s suits from Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Tomorrow Never Dies, and Alec Guinness’s Obi Wan cloak, pictured here.

In recognition of the popular appeal of the items, Bonhams’ saleroom will be allowing interested customers the opportunity to try on selected costumes. So if you can’t afford to bid, you could just try flying to London — but you probably won’t be able to nip off somewhere and play with your significant other unless you win. Over at his blog, Jeff Smith advises Captain Marvel/Shazam fans to "visit DC Comic’s website to find the Monster Society Secret Decoder. On Friday, February 9th, I’ll hide a Monster Egg in my blog and you’ll need the decoder to find it… You will also need to know the code for a couple of lines in the comic book."

He further challenges "every member of the comics blogosphere, blog writers and readers, to do this: if you liked Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil, pick up one extra copy this week or next and give it to a kid you know who likes Harry Potter, Eregon, A Series of Unfortunate Events, manga or just plain loves reading. Promise them that if they like it, you’ll buy them every issue. And ask them to read it and tell you what they think. Do they want to read the next issue? And if they do, you have gotten them interested in comics. And, although it’s a baby step to a massive world, superhero comics."
