BOOM! Studios acquires Archaia

San Diego Comic-Con 2011 - Boom! Studios boothBOOM! Studios, the comics and graphic novel publisher, has acquired indie label Archaia Entertainment. BOOM! Studios will be the surviving company and the Archaia brand shall be maintained as a distinct imprint of BOOM!.

The addition of Archaia positions BOOM!’s catalog of intellectual property as the largest independent company-controlled comic book and graphic novel library, behind only industry titans DC Entertainment (Warner Bros.) and Marvel Entertainment (Disney).

BOOM! Studios was co-founded by Ross Richie and Andrew Cosby in 2005, and is known for Irredeemable, various licensed properties like Planet Of The Apes, The Muppet Show, Farscape, and the upcoming Sons Of Anarchy, their KaBOOM! all-ages imprint with Adventure Time, and their BOOM!Town imprint with various literary comics. Archaia, established in 2002, is known for graphic novels Mouse Guard, Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Rust, Spera, Cowboy, and Gunnerkrigg Court.

BOOM!’s foray into feature films launches this summer with Universal’s August 2 release 2 Guns starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, based on industry veteran Stephen Grant’s original comic. BOOM!’s also prepping to shop two more Grant properties in the works: Damned, Grant’s 1997 miniseries with Mike Zeck which BOOM! is re-releasing in July, and new comic The Deceivers which boasts a set-up akin to 2 Guns with spies. Meanwhile BOOM! is currently prepping its next feature Jeremiah Harm, based on the comic book by Keith Giffen, Alan Grant, and John Mueller, which Timo Vuourensola (Iron Sky) will direct. Archaia also has a number of titles previously optioned or in development including Rust (Fox), Lucid (Warner Bros.), Bolivar (Warner Bros.), and Feeding Ground (Pressman Films).

The Winner Of The Mix March Madness 2012 Webcomics Tournament is… Child’s Play?

The front cover of Gunnerkrigg Court: Orientat...

In the final contest of the tournament between Thomas Siddell’s Gunnerkrigg Court and Tarol Hunt’s Goblins, fans came out in force and it got a bit ugly in the stands. As a response to the vitriol that sprung up in the comment threads, both Thomas and Tarol agreed that whatever they won should be donated to Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in their network of over 70 hospitals worldwide.

To follow their example from their joint donation of $150, ComicMix is adding the $50 that was left over from nobody picking the Final Four contestants, to bring it up to an even $200.

We tip our hats to Tarol and Thomas for being gentlemen, and we hope you enjoy reading their works.

Oh… and congratulations to Gunnerkrigg Court for winning the 2012 Mix March Madness Webcomics Tournament, 22,159 votes to 21,226!

We thank all of you for participating, and hope to see you in a few days when we start taking nominations for our May Mayhem NSFW Webcomics Tournament!

New Thread For Mix March Madness 2012 Finals: Gunnerkrigg Court vs. Goblins — Now With Penalties For Rude Comments

The previous thread for our webcomics tournament final between Thomas Siddell’s Gunnerkrigg Court and Tarol Hunt’s Goblins has grown so large as to impact the operation of the site, not to mention the nasty tone of many comments.

We’ve shut down the comments over there, and are reopening them here. We remind you of our previous statement: referees can call technical fouls on audience members, and doing so will affect vote totals. So keep it civil here.

The finals start right now, and ends tonight, April 9, at 11:59 PM, Eastern Daylight Time.

Mix March Madness 2012 Webcomics Tournament Finals: Gunnerkrigg Court vs. Goblins!

UPDATE: Comments here are closed and a new thread for comments has been started here. You can vote at either page.

It’s here– the final battle of our webcomics tournament between Thomas Siddell’s Gunnerkrigg Court and Tarol Hunt’s Goblins!

Both strips pulled off tremendous upsets in the last round, beating such webcomics as Homestuck and Order Of The Stick, to make it to the final showdown. We remind you that the second place winner will get $50, with the grand prize winner walking away with $100. (We’d also like to point out that if you’re a fan of either of these strips, you may enjoy our own GrimJack: The Manx Cat by John Ostrander and Timothy Truman and Demons of Sherwood by Robert Tinnell and Bo Hampton. End of soft sell.)

The finals start right now, and ends this Monday night, April 9, at 11:59 PM, Eastern Daylight Time. (Yes, we’re making allowances for Good Friday, Passover, the sabbath, and Easter). Go vote! (more…)

Final Four of Mix March Madness 2012 Webcomics Tournament–Vote Now!

UPDATE: Round Six has closed…
Vote in the March Madness Finals now!

Round 6! It’s the semifinals and we’re down to the Final Four!

And now it’s beginning to look like an average installment of Game Of Thrones or Strikeforce Morituri, with favorites dropping all over the place. The big games were Order Of The Stick beating xkcd, followed by the huge surprise upset of Gunnerkrigg Court over Questionable Content, which knocked everybody’s Final Four picks out, so nobody wins the $50 gift card from Amazon for picking the Final Four.

We remind you that our four remaining contenders will get at least $25, and whoever make it to the finals will get $50, with the grand prize winner walking away with $100.

Round 6 starts right now, and ends this Wednesday night, April 4, at 11:59 PM, Eastern Daylight Time. We’re down to four contestants, and we get to see who makes it to the big game and who walks away. Go vote!

Elite Eight of Mix March Madness 2012 Webcomics Tournament–Vote Now!

UPDATE: Round 5 voting is over… Vote in the Final Four Now!

Round 5… and we’re down to the Elite 8!

Even heavier voting this time around, with the highest contestants getting nearly 12,000 votes. Voting has gotten so passionate that some folks are resorting to YouTube videos to spread the word.

In upset news, last year’s winner Erfworld got knocked out in Round 4, along with two contenders from Blind Ferret Entertainment. And with this being the deciding round to see who wins the $50 gift card from Amazon for picking the Final Four, we expect even more passionate arguing this time around.

Round 5 starts right now, and ends this Saturday night, March 31, at 11:59 PM, Eastern Daylight Time. We’re down to four contests, and none of them get easier… we hear the howls of agony in the comments threads over who to choose starting already. Go vote!
