300 breaking 70

300 breaking 70

Earlier today, Dateline Hollywood Daily speculated that the movie adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300, which brought in well over $27 million Friday night in only 3,103 theatres, "looks set to shatter the record for biggest March opening ever," amassing "what is likely to be a $60+ million weekend."  And that’s with the time change and the relatively balmy weather in the northeast this weekend!  Now AP’s David Germain reports that Warner has estimated the weekend’s take at $70 million, which would break last year’s $68 million record for the Ice Age sequel, which played in 850 more theaters.  It’s also about $5-10 million more than the movie cost to make.

Maybe we shouldn’t be that surprised, considering the amount of buzz the film has generated among everyone from women happy to see something catering to the female gaze to political bloggers interpreting parallels between the Battle of Thermopylae and the current situation in Iraq to enthusiastic action-flick audiences just in it for the blood and guts.

It’s not very often that a movie comes along with something for just about everyone — it even serves as a great discussion topic for those who’ve seen it and don’t particularly care for it!

New Adams-Miller Batman pages at NYCC

New Adams-Miller Batman pages at NYCC

ComicMix caught up with Neal Adams this afternoon to talk Batman, and received a couple nice surprises.

Adams is indeed collaborating with Frank Miller on a long-anticipated Batman miniseries entitled Batman: Odyssey, and originally slated for six issues but he believes the story will warrant enough material for eight.  Adams has created and will be plotting and pencilling the story, with Miller supplying the dialogue.  Adams will also be inking the first two issues — and NYCC attendees can see the entire #1 (beautifully detailed art, all of which you can see as there’s no lettering on the booth copy) — but expressed an interest in having other long-time (and as yet unnamed) inkers work over his pencils for future issues.

Until the book is finally scheduled by DC, the place to see the preview will be Booth A317 in Artists Alley.

Mike Raub’s interview with Neal Adams will be on our Podcast this Tuesday.

Miller’s movie opens to accolades

Miller’s movie opens to accolades

IESB reports that the movie adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 received a standing ovation at its world premiere last night at the Berlin Film Festival.  "The screening was interrupted again and again by spontaneous applause and cheers from the 1700 strong audience," adds the movie site.  This would seem to jibe with earlier mostly positive reviews by folks who have seen sneak previews, including Len Wein and Marv Wolfman, and fly in the face of the chorus of boos reported at the earlier press screening.

Ronin next Miller movie adaptation?

IESB reports that Gianni Nunnari will produce and Sylvain White will direct the next big-screen adaptation of a Frank Miller comic, Ronin. Nunnari, who owns the movie rights to the work and has a first look deal with Warner Bros., revealed this news at the press day for 300.  (Via SuperHeroHype, Wilson Morales at blackfilm.com interviews White about his plans for the movie.)

This would seem to put pay to long-ago news of Darren Aronofsky co-writing and directing the film — except that, as Warren Ellis mentions, news that Nunnari would also be bringing Ellis’s and Chris Sprouse’s graphic novel Ocean to film is absolutely untrue. Says Ellis, "I imagine Mr. Nunnari was misheard, or misspoke and will correct himself shortly. No film company has ever attempted to purchase the media rights to Ocean, which are owned by Chris and myself."

Len Wein – Thumbs up on 300

300Len Wein went to a preview of the movie based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300, and has a very positive review of it up on his blog. "The story is one of history’s great tales of heroism and sacrifice and this film definitely does it justice… One word of caution, though: this film is as graphically violent as any I’ve seen."

Graphic violence, from a Frank Miller graphic novel? How unexpected!
