Rumor: New ‘Doctor Who’ Doctor and New Cast for ‘Torchwood’?

Rumor: New ‘Doctor Who’ Doctor and New Cast for ‘Torchwood’?

SciFi Pulse is reporting rumors of major changes in the works for two of the BBC’s most popular sci-fi series, Doctor Who and Torchwood. These changes include a complete cast overhaul for Torchwood, and rumors about the future of both David Tennant, the current Doctor in Doctor Who, as well as his most recent companion, played by Catherine Tate.

If any aspects of the rumors are true, they’re pretty much the definition of the word "spoiler" — so consider yourself warned!

In order to give the spoiler-phobic among ComicMix readers a fighting a chance at avoidance, I’ve posted some details about the revelations after the jump.

Who’s on First for Christmas

Who’s on First for Christmas

Paul Cornell reveals a true horror story hidden inside a mystery, and writes a Dr. Who story of the season for the London Telegraph.

Newsarama has previews of the upcoming series from IDW. A very Brady Christmas indeed.

And it took a little longer than I predicted, but the first of the Dr. Who Christmas episode segments (featuring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue) are now up.  Here’s part one of a promised eight-parter by an enterprising Whovian:

One in-joke that’s probably not really an in-joke but which I appreciated tremendously is the appearance, about three minutes in, of Geoffrey Palmer, probably best known on this side of the pond as Lionel in As Time Goes By (co-starring Dame Judy Dench), but who also did a terrific reading of A Christmas Carol a couple years ago.

Torchwood Two Trailer

Torchwood Two Trailer

Over at Freema Agyeman’s eponymous site, she’s posted a trailer for an episode of Torchwood‘s second series (or season, as they call it on this side of the pond) in which she appears.  Here’s a portion of a still from that episode:

Agyeman’s site also links to what she calls "the TARDIS Friends Network," consisting so far of the eponymous sites of David Tennant and Billie Piper.

In other Torchwood news, Series Two will also be airing specially-edited repeats of each episode which will be deemed more suitable for families and kids and, well, me.  Honestly, all this bed-hopping is driving me dizzy.  In further news, BBC America is still not available on our cable system, so it’s rather a moot point from this end.

Don’t Count David Tennant Out

Don’t Count David Tennant Out

According to Outpost Gallifrey, don’t put too much into all those rumors about David Tennant leaving Doctor Who at the end of this season.

Last week, co-star Catherine Tate told famed British broadcaster Jonathan Ross (In Search Of Steve Ditko) she thought that 2008 might be Tennant’s last. Last night, Tennant told the BBC’s Richard Bacon "It’s a decision I’ve not been forced to make, so I’m just going to play my cards close to my chest as long as I can. Despite what Catherine might have you believe, I haven’t made any decision about the next series yet."

Tennant confirmed he will be staring in four extra-long dramas in the year following the next season, allowing him to fulfill his stage commitments. After that, it’s anybody’s guess.

In an unrelated matter, the London Daily Mail is reporting Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders may be taking on the role of Doctor Who for a special episode. If she does, she’ll be joining AbFab co-star Joanna Lumley as the only female doctors; Ms. Lumley joined Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent at the Doctor in Steven Moffat’s Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death, which some consider to be outside regular continuity.

Time Crashes On

Time Crashes On

I’ve been told to try to keep news bits to only one Dr. Who reference a day, but as we all know Time Crash premiered at this year’s Children In Need special, and naturally it’s now all over the YouTubes.  Here’s the grab we’re passing along.  Intro by Terry "Tight Pants" Wogan and John "Captain Jack" Barrowman from Who spinoff Torchwood:

Le sigh.  Peter Davison was my favorite Doctor before David Tennant came along.  Now for your happy dance:

Dr Who Meets Dr Who Again For The 1st Time

Dr Who Meets Dr Who Again For The 1st Time

The London Sun reports the fifth man to play the Doctor, Peter Davison, will team-up with the tenth man to play the Doctor, David Tennant, this November 19th on a special BBC-TV "charity bonanza" for Children In Need.

This is hardly the first time the sitting (wandering?) Doctor has met up with his past, but it’s the first time since the series was brought back to life almost four years ago. There’s a 20 year age difference between the two; the elder doctor told the Sun “It’s an honour for me to make the connection.”

This should not be confused with the rumored season four Doctor Who final episode, wherein at least four of the doctor’s companions team up with the Doctor and Captain Jack.

A Box Full Of Who

A Box Full Of Who

If you’re a Doctor Who fan given to long drives half-way across the continent (well, hey, I am), here’s a way to pass the time that’s a lot more entertaining that counting cars on the New Jersey turnpike.

Next week, the BBC’s audiobooks division will be releasing a box set of six audiobooks based upon recent novels starring the 10th and current Doctor.

Three of the six were read by David Tennant himself: The Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole, The Stone Rose by Jacqueline Rayner, and The Resurrection Casket by Justin Richards. Buffy’s Anthony Head (himself a frequent performer on Big Finish’s Doctor Who audio dramas) reads The Nightmare of Black Island by Mike Tucker. Rounding out the set, The Price of Paradise by Colin Brake and The Art of Destruction by Stephen Cole are read by Doctor Who actors Shaun Dingwall (Pete Tyler) and Don Warrington (The President in The Age of Steel), respectively.

According to the BBC, each adaptation will run approximately two hours. The set will cost about $100.00 U.S., plus shipping from your favorite neighborhood science fiction or comics importer. Amazon.com usually gets these things… eventually.

Who’s On Fifth?

Who’s On Fifth?

Well, at last the word is out. The BBC has found a way around David Tennant’s commitments to Shakespeare and Russell T. Davies’ desire to stretch. Both will be back in 2009 for a season-between-seasons consisting of three Doctor Who specials, the last probably being the annual Christmas special. Whereas Torchwood is likely to continue, the official start to the official fifth season will happen in 2010.

No word on if Tennant and Davies will be back for Season Five, but it seems doubtful the Doctor will regenerate during the Christmas Special. Unless Santa Claus is from Gallifrey.

Season Four starts transmitting in the U.K. in 2008, following the second season of Torchwood.

Fanboy Meltdown: Picard Meets the Doctor

Fanboy Meltdown: Picard Meets the Doctor

Patrick Stewart, aka Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek : The Next Generation, is teaming up with David Tennant, aka the 10th Doctor of Doctor Who, in The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Hamlet. Tennant has the lead, Stewart does Claudius, and tickets will go faster than a Beatles reunion after Yoko drops dead.

Hamlet runs July 24 through November 15, 2008. Right after that, Tennant plays Berowne in Love’s Labor’s Lost, which, I believe, is a spin-off from last season’s "The Shakespeare Code" episode of Doctor Who, That show runs October 2 through November 15, 2008. So David will be a bit preoccupied next summer and fall.

If you’re planning on seeing either performance, get your passport ready. As one might assume, The Royal Shakespeare Company is in Britain.

Big Doctor Who Crossover Next Season?

Big Doctor Who Crossover Next Season?

According to Outpost Gallifrey, at a convention in New Zealand the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, stated Peter Davison, the Fifth Doctor, is going to appear in a multiple Doctor episode this coming season. He did not say that he, McCoy, would be appearing, nor did he say that any of the other surviving Doctors (other than David Tennant, of course) would be in attendance.

As usualy, the BBC has no comment. The original series offered at least three shows where previous incarnations of the Doctor popped up to help save – and/or confuse – the day.

Thanks to our pal Lisa Sullivan for the lead.
