The Darkness and Will Ferrell

The Darkness and Will Ferrell

No matter what your holiday is, these next couple of weeks will be as fast paced as a Jack Kirby plotline. Here is a couple of quick hits for those “goof off" minutes I know you will grab:

Landlord star Will Ferrell will be criss-crossing college campuses next February to promote FunnyOrDie.com and Semi Pro, his latest feature from New Line Cinema. The site will also release a new video starring Ferrell and his co-star Andrew Daly each week leading up to the film’s premiere on Leap Year Day, Feb. 29th.  The "Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die Comedy Tour" pairs Will with three of the site’s regular stand up comedians, Zach Galifianakis, Demetri Martin, and Nick Swardson. Meanwhile, if you have no idea what’s Will’s Landlord videos are yet – go here (http://www.funnyordie.com)

• Dale Keown returns to the Darkness, with The Darkness #3 in February. He will pencil a special flashback sequence in that issue scheduled for release in February 2008. Meanwhile, The Darkness #3 will feature two covers by Keown and Stjepan Sejic (First Born, Witchblade) and can be previewed here (www.topcow.com/darkness).

Happy 60th birthday, Stephen King!

Happy 60th birthday, Stephen King!

On this day in 1947, Stephen Edwin King, a.k.a. "Richard Bachman", "John Swithen", and "that guy who looks like Frankenstein trying to play rhythm guitar for the Rock Bottom Remainders" was born. Presumably, it was under a full moon with howling wolves and eldritch fog in the distance…

King is best known to comics fans today for the Marvel adaptation of his Dark Tower series, but long time readers know him for the adaptations of Lawnmower Man by Walt Simonson and his adaptation of Creepshow with Berni Wrightson, and his contribution to Heroes For Hope and Heroes Against Hunger.

But only the trivia obsessed fan knows about King’s first attempt to break into Marvel. Way back in the 70’s, he pitched a X-Men story about this teenage girl who just discovered her telekinetic abilities, and the story was rejected by editor Marv Wolfman. The teenage girl got written into a stand-alone horror novel named Carrie, and… well, he got pretty well known pretty darn quick. Although, if this is to be believed, not quickly enough:

Dark Tower to be filmed

Dark Tower to be filmed

First it was the Marvel comic — now the Hollywood Reporter tells us that Stephen King and J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) are in talks to bring The Dark Tower to the screen. No word as to whether it will be for movies or TV.

The article also notes that Abrams co-hort Damon (Ultimate Wolverine/Hulk) Lindelof is also a huge King fanboy, bringing along a rare first edition of "The Gunslinger," Book 1 of the series, for King to sign at a recent round-table for Entertainment Weekly.

No word how this will affect Star Trek XI or any of the other myriad projects that have Abrams’s name attached.

Dark Tower signing at Midtown Comics

It was late and below freezing, but when has that ever stopped real fans?

Well over a hundred people braved the elements to attend the midnight launch of The Dark Tower at the Times Square Midtown Comics, where writer Peter David and artist Jae Lee were on hand to sign copies.

Before midnight, Jae and Peter set up to sign– they were going to have to sign a lot of books. How many, you ask?

The Dark Tower: interview with Peter David

Dark Tower 1Peter David, writer of stuff, was able to take a few minutes between bowling, barfing babies, and boarding a plane to Maine to explain what’s germaine and urbane (and other words in the same vein) about the new Dark Tower series, going on sale tonight at midnight. Oddly, even though I’ve known Peter for over two decades and have been his webmaster for almost five years, this is the first time I’ve ever interviewed him…

Q. Assume I know nothing (always a fair assumption) about The Dark Tower. For those folks out there who’ve never read The Dark Tower or any other works by Stephen King, or just know his works from the movies, can you sum up what the heck’s going on here? What things do I need to know about the story that will make it accessible to me? Or will the comic be fully accessible to those who know nothing about The Dark Tower or even Stephen King?

A. You don’t really need to know anything about the series (well, aside from how to read) than anyone required when the very first Gunslinger novel was published. Basically, Dark Tower is a blend of fantasy and iconic western heroes, detailing the life’s story of Roland, the last of the Gunslingers of a long-ago city called Gilead, and the circumstances that forged him into the hero he eventually became.

Q. So this is more of a true dark fantasy than King’s usual horror?

Colleen Doran’s Nightmare

Colleen Doran’s Nightmare

Colleen Doran’s newest project has been revealed – and Heidi MacDonald is editing it! The Nightmare Factory is a horror anthology put out by FoxAtomic featuring adaptations of three of horror author Thomas Ligotti’s short stories by writers Stuart Moore and Joe Harris and art by Colleen, Ben Templesmith, Michael Gaydos and a cover by Ashley Wood.

Considering the acclaim with which the Stephen King Dark Tower adaptation was met, there’s a good chance this antho will garner similar successes, particularly around Hallowe’en time (the in-store month is October).

Dark Tower – Googling the Mainstream

Dark Tower – Googling the Mainstream

Has the Dark Tower launch event made it past the usual insular comics fan circles? Let’s take a look:

Four pages via Google News, including articles from Maine Today, the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, the Kansas City Star, the Newark Star-Ledger, the San Jose Mercury News, the Toledo Free Press and Cleveland Plain Dealer (of course, the latter is Mike Sangiacomo so that’s a bit of a ringer), the Pike County Courier, the Elmira Star-Gazette, the Kane County Chronicle, the Capital Times, and a few other subscription-only papers. That’s a nice cross-section of coverage around the country!
