Reaper Season One due on DVD

Reaper Season One due on DVD

Lionsgate releases the first season of the CW’s Reaper on November 4.  The amusing show with Bret Harrison and Ray Wise comes as a box set featuring all 18 episodes plus the usual assort of bonus materials including deleted scenes and commentary with cast and crew.  The five-disc set will retail for $39.98.

Reaper features a slacker who discovers his soul was sold to the devil and now has to become Hell’s bounty hunter (while similar to the film Ghost Rider, they’re unrelated). The CW intends to bring the second season to the screen for mid-season.

Weekend Window-Closing Wrapup: June 22, 2008

Back from a long break, crazy deadlines, and other fun stuff… and, man, it didn’t take long for my windows to stay open again, particularly with the new version of Firefox. So, what’s keeping my browser from running well?

Harry Bliss got picked on for lifting a Kirby image for a New Yorker cartoon contest, but it wasn’t the first time he lifted an iconic image for the contest.

Scarlett Johannson tells you to get on your knees. Jamie King tells you to come to her. Sarah Paulson tells you to keep the mask on. Man, the Spirit movie is going to be kinky. Hubba-hubba.

Wonder Woman finds a dead body in the Potomac. Cue the Jack C. Harris cred– what? It really happened?

If you’re using Verizon to read alt.binaries.comics, you’ve got until Thursday before Verizon shuts off your access. I’m cancelling my service over it, how about you?

Networks Tighten Belts, Cut Pilots

Networks Tighten Belts, Cut Pilots

Television networks are drastically reducing the number of pilots scheduled for production this year, according to statements issued in the last few days by many of the major networks. An elimination of pilots and reduction in the number of new script orders was announced by several networks recently, with each of the statements citing a need to cut costs due to the writers’ strike.

According to Variety, CBS announced that it had dropped several scripts due to the work stoppage late last week, while 20th Century Fox and CW announced this week that they were each dropping 8-12 pilots from their upcoming production schedules.

"Due to the ongoing work stoppage, the CW will be taking a more targeted approach to what is certain to be a truncated pilot season," the [network] said in a statement released Tuesday. "As a result, we are releasing some scripts that had been in development in order to dedicate our creative energy and resources to those projects we choose to pursue."

The First Presidential News Conference On TV!

The First Presidential News Conference On TV!

After having been tracking it for some time, we are pleased to announce we have finally found the beginning of the end. Ladies and gentlemen, today in 1955, the very first presidential news conference was filmed for television and newsreels. All that business with the media skewing coverage for political gain these days really couldn’t have started without the help of Dwight Eisenhower, his 33 minute conference, and the cameras of NBC, CBS, ABC and the Dumont Network (the 50’s version of UPN or WB before the CW merge).

Ah, remembering a time when the news was served straight, and remembering it with the bitter knowledge of posterity and its cold corporate hand fondling Wolf Blitzer’s – ahem – I mean, CNN gives really honest and objective coverage. And so does Fox. And for whoever else is reading, I love my country and I wear red white and blue every day under my regular clothes. La, la, la, nothing to read here…

Behind The Big ComicMix Broadcast

Behind The Big ComicMix Broadcast

As the days roll by, I have two stacks of paper here on the Big ComicMixBroadcast Desk. One is labeled “Before San Diego,” the other is marked “Whenever.” That pretty much stands as a metaphor for things here right now as well. However, that doesn’t mean I have lost ANY of the notes I need to share with you from the week:

  •  If you are looking to (*ahem*) familiarize yourself with the actress cast as the new Supergirl on the CW’s Smallville, I found the best place to be here. It is much better than sitting through My Mom Has A Date With A Vampire – trust me!
  • The “test version” of Disney’s new free (with ads) gaming site can be seen here,  but BE CAREFUL. There are still links up fore the old subscription based site.
  • You can get info on all the deals offered & the creators appearing at SDCC from Penny Farthing Press here. A lot of these books can be ordered right from the site, too.
  • If that editorial job offered by IDW Press sounds interesting, you can get a jump on this by going here for more info.
  • You can see samples of Breaking Up by Aimee Friedman and Christine Norrie, you can go to Christine’s site. You get treated to a LOT of Christine’s other work – a real bonus!

Back at you in a couple of days as we continue to edge closer to the San Diego ComicCon, marvel at Harry’s magic boxox office and clear off the shelf for a big pile of new comics and DVDs!!

Sending candy bars to CW to save Veronica Mars

Sending candy bars to CW to save Veronica Mars

Since it worked so well for Jericho, there’s another grassroots campaign in the works – this time, people are sending Mars bars to CW president Dawn Ostroff in an attempt to save Veronica Mars.

The Indian Food Store is collecting many many many Mars bars from around the world and sending them to Ms. Ostroff with a note that reads: "Veronica Mars: More Addictive Than Chocolate! Satisfy our craving for Season 4!" They got over 600 orders in the first three hours, and will probably get many more as the word gets out.

Mmmmm… Kristen Bell and chocolate…. <insert Homer Simpson gurgle here>

Yes, and we’re not above running the picture of Kristen Bell in the Leia outfit to get your attention. If need be, we also have the cheerleader and leather outfits. But only if you save the show.

CW upfronts: Smallville, Supernatural back

CW upfronts: Smallville, Supernatural back

Via Variety: The CW has officially greenlit three dramas and two unscripted magazine shows — but there’s still no final word on the fate of Veronica Mars.

Definitely gone: All of Us, the Will Smith-produced laffer that ran for three seasons on UPN and the CW. Returning shows snagging official pickups: Laffers Girlfriends and The Game and dramas Smallville, Supernatural and One Tree Hill. CW picked up Everybody Hates Chris for a third season earlier this spring.

As expected, CW execs Tuesday called the producers of Gossip Girl, Reaper and a remake of Blighty family drama Wild at Heart to give them the good news. Things are still looking promising for comedy Aliens in America, though as of early Tuesday afternoon , there was no official order yet.

My suspicion: CW is looking to use the FBI option as a way to reduce/restart headcount on Veronica Mars, and if they want to keep it around as a mid-season replacement, then they’d only have to pay the option for Kristen Bell. Everybody else — "hey, sorry, we don’t need you four years in the future, but if you’re available, that would be great…" Saves money and allows them to have a show in reserve for when they have an hour-sized hole in the schedule later in the year. And you know there will be one, sooner or later.

It had been announced previously that this coming season would be the last for Smallville, and Michael Rosenbaum had confirmed it would be his last. Just in time for the next theatrical appearance of the Man of Steel, probably in the Justice League of America movie.
