A new Starz is born in Canada

A new Starz is born in Canada

With all the talk about the Canadian dollar reaching par with its American counterpart, now would seem the perfect time for a US animation studio to branch northward.  Starz Animation Toronto officially opened this past Tuesday and is already billing itself as "ne of Canada’s largest 3D animation, effects and compositing facilities, and Toronto’s leading studio for breakthrough digital production."

The studio’s first major project will be fantasy epic 9, based on an Oscar®-nominated short, co-produced by Tim Burton, directed by Shane Acker, and featuring voice work from Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and John C. Reilly.  As one might expect from Burton, it’s a happy tale "about rag dolls battling for civilization’s survival in a post-apocalyptic parallel world."  It’s slated to be released late next year.

The studio will also generate income through producing content for TV, commercials and live-action visual effects.

Spider-Man 3 cures world hunger!

Spider-Man 3 cures world hunger!

It’s even more ridiculous, folks.

Nikki Finke updates the running tally with the global numbers: Spider-Man 3 has produced the biggest worldwide opening ever with $375 million, upsetting the previous record of $254 mil by Star Wars Episode 3. The overseas estimates from 107 countries total $225 mil; pic was the biggest film debut ever in at least 26 countries including Russia, China, Italy, South Korea, Japan.

SM3 also shattered all the North American records (U.S. and Canada) for biggest opening day ever, biggest second day of release and biggest third day of release. Though SM3 fell -14% Saturday compared to Friday, that number without the midnight shows is actually +4%. This means that, comparatively, the threequel almost did in two days what the original Spidey did in three days back in 2002.

Now YOU can slurp Spider-Man!

Spider-Man fans (and people like me who collect lenticulars) can take part in the upcoming media frenzy over the release of Spider-Man 3 this month at more than 5,800 participating 7-Eleven stores in the United States and Canada.  Fans can buy Slurpee’s in a selection of three Spidey-related lenticular cups.

In addition, there’s an online contest at hhttp://www.slurpee.com with prizes that include three trips to New York for the movie’s premiere April 30.  Other prizes include Spider-Man 3 video games and Spider-Man 2.1 DVDs.

Fans in Denmark, Hong Kong, southern China, Taiwan, the Phillippines and Sweden can buy the special Slurpees but are not eligible for the contest.

"This is one of the coolest cups we have ever designed, perfect for a perennially cool product like Slurpee," said Rita Bargerhuff, 7-Eleven Senior Marketing Director. "We worked very closely with Columbia Pictures to create lenticular illustrations that would make great collectibles for any Spider-Man or Slurpee fan. I expect the cups will sell quickly."

In a related event, the featured Slurpee flavor for April is Black Cherry Lemonade.

Who four confirmed

The BBC has picked up Doctor Who for a fourth season of its latest incarnation.

According to an interview with series producer and co-writer Russell T. Davies published in the London Telegraph, once again there will be a Christmas special between seasons three and four. However, there is no word as of yet if stars David Tennant and Freema Agyeman will return – or, for that matter, if Mr. Davies will return as well.

The third season begins in England on March 31 and in Canada this summer; the second season has been broadcast in the States on the SciFi Channel and the first season currently is being rerun on numberous PBS stations.
