If You Didn’t Know Minck Oosterveer, Read His BOOM! Work For Free

In honor of the memory of Minck Oosterveer, who passed away last weekend, BOOM! Studios is offering all issues of Mark Waid and Oosterveer’s The Unknown and The Unknown: Devil Made Flesh for free through all their digital partners — comiXology, iVerse, Graphicly, and mydigitalcomics. It’s a very good story, albeit a bit weird reading it now, with its themes of life after death.

Take a look and see just what made this guy so good. Here’s a preview of the first ten pages of The Unknown:

Also, BOOM!’s Editor-in-Chief, Matt Gagnon, has written a stirring remembrance of Minck.

Re: BOOM! Studios Hold Music

This simply has to be acknowledged: While calling up BOOM! Studios today to check on a project, I was put on hold. And hand on a Bible, this is the song that they use for their “on hold” music:

What I can’t figure out is just advertising for Zombie Tales, or if this is some statement of corporate policy. Just to show that they’re not unreasonable.

Music, of course, by Jonathan Coulton.

Peanuts Happiness is a warm blanket, Charlie Brown

Kaboom! announces new Peanuts graphic novel

Peanuts Happiness is a warm blanket, Charlie BrownThis March, join Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy and all your favorite Peanuts characters as Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown, the very first Peanuts graphic novel ever published, is released by newly-launched all-ages imprint kaboom! Based on the work by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz himself, this graphic novel is sure to delight a whole new generation of Peanuts fans!

“We’re honored to publish such a beloved property,” BOOM! Studios Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ross Richie said. “I can think of no better way to kick-off our new all-ages imprint kaboom! than with the first Peanuts graphic novel ever published!”

Adapted from the brand new animated special from Warner Home Video, Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown features Charlie Brown’s kite-flying woes, Linus’ insecurities, Lucy’s unrequited love for Schroeder and everyone’s favorite beagle, Snoopy, in a lively and colorful spin through Charles Schulz’s imagination. The 80 page, 7×10, hardcover graphic novel ships this March at the suggested retail price of $19.99 in conjunction with the all-new Peanuts animated feature of the same name available on DVD from Warner Home Video March 29, 2011.

Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown is written by original creator Charles M. Schulz and adapted by Craig Schulz and Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine) with art by Bob Scott, Vicki Scott and Ron Zorman.

“New original Peanuts comic book content is a tradition that goes pretty far back in comic book publishing,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief, Matt Gagnon. “Dell Comics published ‘Tip Top Comics’ which featured new Peanuts comic book content created under the guidance of Charles Schulz. ‘Tip Top’ ran from 1936 until 1961, creating well over 40 original Peanuts stories and countless covers. It’s exciting to be a part of the return of Peanuts to the comic book format.”

The Happiness is a Warm Blanket graphic novel and DVD dovetails into a larger campaign launched in January when Peanuts proclaimed 2011 as “The Year of ‘Happiness Is…”. Throughout the year, the classic Peanuts concept, which cartoonist Charles M. Schulz coined in 1960 with “Happiness is a Warm Puppy,” will be celebrated with special-themed products, cross-branding partnerships, social media campaigns and nationwide activities.

Launched last week, KABOOM! is the brand new name for BOOM! Studios’ three year old all-ages imprint previously known as BOOM Kids!

Mark Waid Leaves BOOM!

Mark Waid Leaves BOOM!

Mark Waid has been a good friend to ComicMix and we wish him well as he returns to the always exciting life of a fulltime freelancer.

Here’s the official word from BOOM! Studios:

December 9th, 2010 – Los Angeles, CA – It is with a heavy heart but also with great warmth and fondness that BOOM! Studios bids adieu to one of its own: effective immediately, Mark Waid is stepping down from the responsibility of Chief Creative Officer at BOOM! Studios. Waid will continue his run on IRREDEEMABLE and INCORRUPTIBLE and his brand new break-out hit collaboration with Stan Lee, THE TRAVELER.

“Mark was key in BOOM!’s transition from a promising upstart to top tier  publisher,” Ross Richie, the Chief Executive Officer of BOOM! Studios remarked. “Now that we’ve reached this stage, Mark’s made it clear to me that he’s ready to take on new challenges. And we wish him the best!”

“I learned a lot in my time at BOOM! about the ever-evolving job of publishing comics in the 21st century, and it’s been an invaluable experience,” Waid said. “But now that BOOM! is in a strong place with its best foothold ever in the market, it’s time for me to refocus my energies on writing and on creating. And maybe take one of these ‘vacation’ things that people are always talking about.”

At Comic-Con International in 2007, BOOM! Studios shocked the industry with the appointment of Mark Waid as Editor-in-Chief of BOOM! Studios. After three years as Editor-in-Chief, and writer of some of the bestselling BOOM! Studios titles like IRREDEEMABLE, INCORRUPTIBLE and most recently THE TRAVELER, Waid was promoted to Chief Creative Officer in the summer of 2010. Today, after a little over three years at the company, Waid leaves BOOM! Studios firmly entrenched as one of the top comic book companies in North America.

“Working day-to-day with a creator of Mark’s caliber is an experience I’ll never forget,” said recently-minted Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “Thankfully, with IRREDEEMABLE, INCORRUPTIBLE, and THE TRAVELER going strong on the stands, I still get the pleasure of working day-in-and-day-out with Mark. He’s one of the greats and I wish him the best in the next chapter of his influential career.”

“Mark’s such a phenomenal talent, but also a phenomenally good sport.” Chip Mosher, Marketing Director added. “I’d like to publicly apologize that the tagline ‘Mark Waid is Evil’ will follow him the rest of his days! While Mark’s presence on the BOOM! team will be missed, I look forward to reading what is next on all the BOOM! books he will continue to concentrate on.”

While Mark Waid exits the executive team at BOOM! Studios, Waid will continue writing all three of his current BOOM! Studios titles. This December sees the release of IRREDEEMABLE #20 and INCORRUPTIBLE #13, in what continues to be one of the most successful launches of a new series in the past five years in the Direct Market. The success of the single issues for both series have been surpassed only by the massive trade paperback sales, with December also seeing blockbuster pre-orders for IRREDEEMABLE VOL. 5 and INCORRUPTIBLE VOL. 3 TPBs, that will be hitting store shelves later this month. Waid’s collaboration with Stan Lee, THE TRAVELER #2, also tearing up the sales charts, hits store shelves later this month.

Stan’s Back! (Really!)

Stan’s Back! (Really!)

Savvy interweb surfer types may have noticed the viral campaign that hit the web last week; The stark white text on black background declaring that ‘Stan’s Back!”. Clicking it brought them no more information, rather, just a quick detour to a larger version of the ad. But, we here at ComicMix are glad to inform you just what’s going on.

Stan “The Man” Lee is returning to the industry he helped shape! That’s right. The creator of a few lesser known characters you may have heard of (The Incredible Hulk
ring a bell? No? The Fantastic Four? Still nothing? How about Spider-Man? The X-Men…?) is coming back to comics with a bang! Or more appropriatley… a BOOM! Stan Lee’s POW! (Purveyors of Wonder) Entertainment, Inc. has teamed up with Boom! Studios to announce the release of three superhero titles slated to hit stands later this year.

Word around the campfire is that the Incorruptable and Irredeemable Mark Waid will helm one book, with a promise of 2 more “A-Listers” to be brought on under Stan’s forthcoming imprint. Shortly after hearing that news, we had to catch our breath. When we got back to the campsite, the fire was already extinguished, and the supplies were gone. While this assured us that yes, Mark Waid is Evil… they were nice enough to leave a note on the ground that declared “More Information To Come Soon…”

Consider yourselves now in-the-know. Stay tuned for more edification.

BOOM! Studios Adds Tony Shenton

BOOM! Studios Adds Tony Shenton

Tony Shenton has been hired by BOOM! Studios to represent their trade paperback and hardcover lists to comic books stores and other specialty stores across the nation.

"Tony brings a personal touch that you just don’t see anymore in the comic book industry. As the former buyer for Meltdown Comics, one of the largest stores on the West Coast, I loved working with Tony because he was an important advocate for new material and getting those products into the retail channel," said BOOM! Studios Managing Editor Matt Gagnon in a release.  "BOOM! wants to give comic book retailers as many ways to buy our books as possible. Partnering up with Tony is all about giving retailers a choice."

One of the few people to make a career of selling directly on behalf of publishers to comic shops and other select businesses, Tony has managed to survive for nearly 16 years on commissions alone. He works with publishers as large as NBM Publishing & Drawn and Quarterly, and for distributors Last Gasp and Haven. He’s also helped small grassroots publishers such as Spark Plug grow and Tony works with lesser-known grassroots publishers. While he takes satisfaction from receiving store orders, Tony’s greatest love is exposing newer, younger talents to the retail environment and watching that talent grow, publish, flourish and sell more books.

In 2007 BOOM!’s signed a mass-market book distribution deal with Perseus Distribution, the largest independent book distributor to the mass market nationally and internationally allowing retailers the ability to buy direct through Perseus or through wholesalers like Baker and Taylor.

Since instituting an aggressive trade paperback and hardcover program BOOM!’s line has grown to over forty trade paperbacks and hardcovers that have hit store shelves with near universal critical acclaim.

‘Warhammer’ Collection to Contain Game Premium

‘Warhammer’ Collection to Contain Game Premium

BOOM! Studios have announced that their upcoming trade paperback, Warhammer: Crown of Destruction, includes an exclusive in-game item for Mythic Entertainment’s critically acclaimed MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Each copy of Warhammer: Crown of Destruction, written by Kieron Gillen (Phonogram), and drawn by newcomer Dwayne Harris, contains a unique code to unlock the Book of BOOM!, a special item said to have an explosive effect on a player’s character.

"I’m so happy to bring together the fans of Warhammer gaming and Warhammer comics," said BOOM! Studios’ Games Workshop editor Ian Brill in a release.  "BOOM! is all about telling stories with visual art, conveying our tales of adventure and human drama as comics.  Video games are interactive stories, and while their interfaces may differ from ours, the goal of escapism and fun is still present.  This promotion is meant to expose readers of comics and video games to see what the other side has to offer."

Warhammer: Crown of Destruction is BOOM! Studios’ third series from the blood-soaked Warhammer battlefield.  Greatsword Frohlich, last seen in Forge of War, leads his men into a clash with the bloodthirsty Skaven.  What seemed like just another test of Sigmar’s power reveals itself to be more.
