David Tennant’s final ‘Doctor Who’ episodes scheduled for BBC America

All good things must come to an end, and they’ll be ending at pretty much the same time here as in the UK.

BBC America will air the US premieres of the three Doctor Who specials where David Tennant ends his turn in the title role. Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars airs on December 19 at 9 PM Eastern; Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part One airs December 26 at 9 PM Eastern; and the final special Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part Two airs January 2, 2010 at 9 PM Eastern.

But worry not– Tennant will be back on TV soon on NBC, no less, in the new series Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, being prepped for a fall premiere. Let’s see if he can do a Chicago accent…

BBC America goes HD July 20 with lots of SF, including ‘Torchwood: Children Of Earth’

BBC Worldwide will launch BBC America HD, the hi-def simulcast of BBC America, on July 20– and they’ll be rolling out a lot of science fiction during their first week:

  • The five part Torchwood: Children of Earth will debut July 20 at 9 PM and air Monday through Friday.
  • That Saturday, July 25, Primeval has its third season finale at 8 PM and Being Human premieres at 9 PM.
  • Then on Sunday, the first of the last four David Tennant Doctor Who specials runs at 8 PM.

So if you can’t make it to San Diego, you get a few things to compensate. And if you are going to San Diego, you better hope your hotel has HD and BBCA HD.

Today’s list of quick items that don’t fill a full post on their own:

  • Hugh Jackman to Do Oscars Drunk and Nude. Okay, maybe that would deserve a post of its own, if only it were true. Still, the post from E! Online wins headline of the week around here. Also, Ricky Gervais will write some of Hugh’s Oscars gags.
     
  • If you’re a fan of anime, manga and/or other Japanese pop culture in New York City, run, don’t walk to BookOff in Midtown – they’re having a 20% off sale on almost everything in the store until the end of this month.  This emporium for used Japanese language books, CDs, DVDs, manga and videotapes ALSO has a substantial selection of good-condition second-hand materials in English. Their usual US edition manga prices are around 40%-50% off  and the current sale takes the percentage off of that. They also sell $1 books and $3 CD’s, which don’t get the 20% discount but what the hey, those prices are already a steal.

    Since it’s second-hand, the selection is kind of catch-as-catch-can, but this reporter always ends up walking out of the store with SOMETHING cool. Just make sure you give yourself a strict spending limit…this reporter also has been known to get a little carried away with the bargains.

  • Are your pop-culture tastes more Anglophile than Japanophile? (Or, hey, it’s OK to be both — I loves me my Monty Python as much as my Mobile Suit Gundam) you will want to keep your eyes on BBC America. Ashes To Ashes, the BBC sequel/spinoff of the  time-travel (or something) series Life on Mars (the Americanized version of which is currently airing on ABC) will begin airing on the cable network in March. Check your cable or satellite system for BBC America On-Demand — you can catch a 25-minute sneak preview of the first episode of Ashes to Ashes now.
  • DOCTOR WHO MEETS THE BIONIC WOMAN! Well, no actually, it’s actually pictures from the set of the new Doctor Who Easter special, which also features Michelle Ryan, late of last year’s Bionic Woman reboot.
  • And, getting back to anime, in case you haven’t heard — a new Full Metal Alchemist TV series is coming in April!  The scuttlebutt seems to be that it will explore the continuity of the manga that diverged from that of the original TV series.

Waiting for the new season of Torchwood to start? Jonesing for more Captain Jack Harkness? We have something that might tide you over…

BBC America has just picked up a new musical theater reality series featuring John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack. Any Dream Will Do, with eleven 90 minute episodes, will chronicle the search for a new male talent to play Joseph in the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Graham Norton hosts the series which also showcases Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Any Dream Will Do makes its U.S. premiere on March 29 at 8 PM– and if that’s not enough for you, it will be followed by a one-hour special The Making of Me: John Barrowman.

All right, you fans of Jack/John… get going.

‘Ashes to Ashes’ Coming to BBC America in March

ABC has been enjoying the growing success of its adaptation of the BBC’s Life on Mars.  The original program, though, struggled to keep its stories going and wrapped the series after two seasons and 16 episodes. For a glimpse of what happen next, take a look at the BBC’s sequel Ashes to Ashes, which BBC America just picked up for domestic broadcast in March.

Ashes To Ashes is written and created by Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharaoh, two creators of Life on Mars. The eight-episode first season aired in the UK last February and March.

Julie Gardner, BBC Wales Head of Drama, said in a release, "Sam Tyler took us on an amazing journey with Life On Mars but his story always had a definite life span.

"However, fans will be excited to learn that Gene Hunt lives on through Ashes To Ashes and we’re certain they will love his Eighties escapades."

Jane Featherstone, Executive Producer for Kudos, added, "Ashes to Ashes is the next chapter in the life of Gene Hunt, as seen through the eyes of a modern, no-nonsense woman.

"It’s a touch of Moonlighting teamed with a measure of Miami Vice.”

SDCC: BBC America Adds ‘Torchwood’ Season Three

I just got an e-mail from ComicMix‘s Chris Ullrich, who was sitting in on a panel at Comic-Con regarding the TV show Torchwood.

Chris has an update on the show that’s sure to be happy news for fans of Torchwood.

He writes:

I’m at the torchwood panel and they just announced season three was picked up by BBC America. Deal was done today.

TV REVIEW: Jekyll

What if the story of Jekyll and Hyde were based on a real person, a true case? And what if there were someone alive in the present day that had the same horrible curse?

This is the premise of the new BBC mini-series Jekyll, premiering this Saturday at 8 PM on BBC America. The series was envisioned by producer Jeffrey Taylor and Steven Moffat, creator of the British comedy Coupling and writer of several episodes of the new Doctor Who series (such as “[[[The Girl In The Fireplace]]]” and “[[[The Empty Child]]]”). Steven Moffat handles the writing for all episodes.

The six episode mini-series features Doctor Tom Jackman, a man who doesn’t know who his parents were, having been found as an abandoned baby in a railway station. For the past several months, Dr. Jackman has been having black-outs during which another force is inexplicably inhabiting his body. Along with this darker personality that seems to lack any morals, there is a physical change. Jackman’s alter ego is actually younger, thinner, two inches taller, and has borderline superhuman strength and speed. Jackman soon finds out that the famous story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was based on a real person who lived and died in the 19th century. Now Jackman struggles to keep his life in control and his family safe, a family he prays that his own “Mr. Hyde” will never find out about lest he decide to attack them.

James Marsters will be guest-starring in an episode of the R-rated Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood.

Perhaps best known as Spike in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel teevee series and as well as Dr. Milton Fine in Smallville, Marsters has also voiced the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming D2DVD Superman: Doomsday. He is also a musician and singer, playing solo and as lead singer of Ghost of the Robot.

The second season of Torchwood goes up in the U.K. after the first of the year; the first season goes up on BBC America in September.

The third season of the new Doctor Who series will hit the U.S. cable channels in July, starting with the 2006 Christmas Special, "The Runaway Bride".

The new series will run on the Sci-Fi Channel, home to the previous two seasons of shows. Ultimately, it will be syndicated and appear alongside its "adult" spin-off show Torchwood on BBC America.

The week following "The Runaway Bride" U.S. fans will meet the Doctor’s new companion Martha Jones in the season’s opening episode "Smith and Jones."

Torchwood co-executive producer Julie Gardner disclosed the show’s second season will begin airing on the BBC at the beginning of next year.

In its article about the new Doctor Who season in the British publication The Stage, Ms. Gardner stated last season the show didn’t have as much post-production time  as they would have liked. This year, the season debut will be pushed back a bit – after the as yet unannounced Doctor Who special that airs on or around Christmas. This would likely push the debut of the next season of Doctor Who back a few weeks.

The current  Doctor Who season will be featuring several guest appearances from Torchwood‘s Captain Jack. The first season of Torchwood will be making its American debut on BBC America this September.
