Barack Obama, John Hodgman, and the Great Nerd vs. Jock Debate

If there was ever a video that summed up everything we cover at ComicMix– politics, Star Trek, probing questions, PC vs. Mac, and of course comics and geek culture– this video might be it. It’s John Hodgman’s headlining speech at the 2009 Radio and TV Correspondents’ Dinner.

Watch it. You’ll feel better afterward.

Good luck, sir.

Yes, We Will

Yes, We Will

The happy mutants at Tor.com– no wait, the happy mutants are at BoingBoing, the snarky geeks are at io9, and the ink-stained shockwave riders are at Tor.com– are running a Dan Goldman comic, "Yes We Will", in which Obama deals with the greatest problem of his first term, as predicted by Nostradamus. Or the Mayans. Or Timothy Leary. Or something like that.

Go read it, it’s fun.

Although I can deal with the idea of the singularity a lot easier than I can with Barack Obama not dressed nattily. I’m sorry, but that’s stretching credibilty too far.

Comic stores donating Spider-Man/Obama profits to charity

Comic stores donating Spider-Man/Obama profits to charity

In the spirit of coming together, a number of stores are taking Amazing Spider-Man #583, featuring Spider-Man meeting Barack Obama, a comic that they know they’re going to sell out of when it goes on sale today, and are using the money to help others.

Green Brain Comics in Dearborn, Michigan has announced that they’re donating money from the sales to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Wonderworld Comics in Taylor, Michigan is offering a variety of deals: buy a store gift certificate for $100, for example, and get the Obama Spider-Man issue for free. Wonderworld is donating some proceeds to the Hero Initiative.

We think this should be encouraged, so if you are running any such benefits, or if you hear of any of them, send a quick note to us here, or post it in the comments, and we’ll update this entry to include it. (Hat tip: Patricia Montemurri, Detroit Free Press.)

Fox and Warner go all in on ‘Watchmen’, will let judge decide instead of jury

Fox and Warner go all in on ‘Watchmen’, will let judge decide instead of jury

Here’s your latest test for geekdom: On January 20th, are you going to be more excited by Barack Obama’s inauguration, or by the court hearing to see if Fox can block Warner Brothers from releasing Watchmen?

The two studios have agreed to let Judge Gary Feess decide whether Fox is entitled to an injunction blocking release of the film, instead of going to a jury trial which would delay the release.  The hearing is currently schedule to begin on January 20th, unless the judge grants Warners’ request to move the hearing to an earlier date.

In addition to the agreement that the judge can decide the case, the two have agreed that neither will oppose requests to expedite an appeal.

My take? So it’s delayed. You kids today– you don’t even know what a delay is. I remember the months of delays just waiting for Watchmen #11 to come out, in the middle of a huge cliffhanger. Don’t even get me started on Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #3 or Camelot 3000 #12. (Oh, and while you’re at it, get off my lawn.) That said, I’m certainly looking closely at the outcome.

‘Mutts’ Comments on Obama Dog Adoption

‘Mutts’ Comments on Obama Dog Adoption

Mutts has never been afraid of dealing with current events and now, a new storyline begins on Monday as the characters begin discussing the hunt for a dog as pet for president-elect Barack Obama’s children.

Patrick McDonnell’s comic strip is currently syndicated in over 700 newspapers most recently advocated in favor of a California proposition and now focuses on the desire for the Obamas to find a dog from a shelter.  The new First Family’s every step is carefully chosen these days for its symbolic meaning and Obama keeping his campaign promise to his daughters is now different.

McDonnell uses strip regulars Mooch the Cat and Earl the Dog to spotlight the 7.5 million dogs and 16.2 million cats now living in American homes, all of which came from shelters.

The Humane Society of the United States has showered McDonnell with their Genesis Award three times to date. He’s been singled out for using Mutts to show how hard the staff and volunteers at animal shelters work to rescue and care for the more than six million animals living in shelters in this country.. Shelter Stories: Love Guaranteed collects 100 of the strips along with 70 candid photos of rescued dogs that have gone on to new homes through the adoption process.

Barack Obama, Fanboy

Barack Obama, Fanboy

President-elect Barack Obama is apparently closer to our audience than any of his predecessors.  According to “The 50 Facts You Might Not Know” in the London Telegraph, the following information has emerged:

• He collects Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian comics
• He has read every Harry Potter book
• His favorite films are Casablanca and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
• He enjoys playing Scrabble and poker
• He uses an Apple Mac laptop
• His favorite fictional television programs are M*A*S*H and The Wire

So the question is this: does he prefer Barry Windsor-Smith or John Buscmea’s depiction of the Cimmerian?

Is Barack Obama Kryptonian?

Is Barack Obama Kryptonian?

This week at the annual Alfred E. Smith Charity Dinner, Barack Obama made a couple of comic book references, one to Superman and one to Alfred E. Neuman. Check the video at about :46 and again at 5:46…

So if Barack is Superman, does that makes McCain the Dark Knight?

IDW’s Presidential Tour

IDW’s Presidential Tour

IDW has announced signing tour dates for the creators behind the two eagerly anticipated bio-comics featuring presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain. Additionally, both comics will be made available for download to mobile phones.

The application is accessible to most cell phones in America through http://m.gocomics.com, while iPhone users can order the comics through Apple.  This may be the first time comic books will have the same in store and download date.

“It’s only fitting that in this historic election that we break new ground in the publishing and online media worlds with the first ever simultaneous release of these graphic novels in both print and on mobile phones. It is also a great move for our democracy to make these beautiful candidate biographies universally available,” said Uclick CEO Douglas Edwards in a release.

The comics have garnered IDW a fair amount of publicity being the first time the candidates have been profiled in graphic form during a campaign.  The publisher has stressed that writers Jeff Mariotte and Andrew Helfer did independent research on both men and tried to present fair interpretations of their lives, providing additional background to readers who may not be as familiar with the candidates through traditional news media.
