‘Justice League’ Film Delayed Again

‘Justice League’ Film Delayed Again

ComicMix previously reported that the Justice League film currently in production was having a few problems with tax breaks in Australia. Alas, the combined might of superheroes is no match for the tax system and the production of the film will have to move elsewhere.

Previously, Canada was cited as the likely destination of the film. However, now New Zealand is being floated as a possible candidate. Not only is it closer to Australia than Canada is, but special effects studio Weta Workshop is located there. Weta is responsible for designing the costumes for the film.

The film already has actors cast and a script ready, but the the inability to find a suitable location for filming could prevent Justice League from ever taking off. If the SAG ends up striking, it could be the final nail in the coffin for this troubled production.

New ‘Wolverine’ Set Photos Appear Online

New ‘Wolverine’ Set Photos Appear Online

Another day, another photo (or 10) from the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. Previously, there’s been the first official photo from the movie, a few set photos and a cool Wolverine pic for you to enjoy. Now, thanks to celeb photographer Just Jared, there’s a lot more behind-the-scene from the film photos to bring you today.

Over at the site you can see some of the fist pics of a bulked-up Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth and, of course, some more shots of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine — all taken during what appears to be a break in filming at the Sydney, Australia set of the movie. There’s also a few pics showing the make-up department touching-up Schreiber’s Sabretooth claws and a close-up of the claws as well.

Seeing these latest pics had me asking some of the same questions as a few of the commentors at the site. For example, how will the movie explain the size difference between Schreiber as Sabretooth in this film and Tyler Mane in X-Men? Also, what’s up with Schreiber’s hair? Isn’t Sabretooth a blonde?

I’m sure these questions will all get answered once the film hits theaters May 1, 2009.

‘X-Men: Origins’ Recasts Young Logan

‘X-Men: Origins’ Recasts Young Logan

There’s a new actor playing the childhood version of Logan in the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine and his name is Troye Mellet. If that name’s unfamiliar to you, perhaps you should pay more attention to YouTube.

Mellet first attracted the interest of the film’s producers in YouTube clips such as this one, which feature his singing voice. Mellet is no stranger to acting and has received some acclaim for playing the lead in Oliver in Sydney, Australia. If there’s any need for young Logan to break into a rendition of "Hard Knock Life," Mellet has the pipes to pull it off.

The actor originally cast for the role, Kodi Smit-McPhee, has had to bow out of the project due to prior commitments and a change in shooting dates for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. McPhee is attached to the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, which stars Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron.

Martian Manhunter Cast in ‘Justice League’ Film

Martian Manhunter Cast in ‘Justice League’ Film

If Warner Bros. decides to move Justice League out of Australia, a few friends from down under will be tagging along for the ride.

Director George Miller has cast Hugh Keays-Byrne in the role of the Martian Manhunter. Byrne is known primarily for his work in Australian film and television.

Miller first worked with Byrne a scant 29 years ago on the original Mad Max , which was released in 1979.

Byrne played Toecutter, the main villain of the film responsible for murdering Max’s family and turning him into the post-apocalyptic vigilante we all know and love. Now he’s playing a Martian superhero. The two characters actually share a common bond – a fear of exploding cars and fires – making it easy for Byrne to step into J’onn J’onzz’s green skin and blue underwear.

‘Justice League’ Movie Heads To Canada

‘Justice League’ Movie Heads To Canada

Warner Bros.’ Justice League movie seems to be facing far deadlier villains than the Legion of Doom before it even gets off the ground. A rushed script and casting issues supposedly put the film’s status in jeopardy, but a dispute over filming incentives in Australia may damage things further.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that production on the film may be moving to Canada due to a dispute with the Australian Federal Government. The country’s new film incentive program gives a 40-percent rebate to Australian producers, but there is debate as to whether or not it should apply to movies with budgets exceeding $30 million dollars.

Director George Miller wants to keep the production based at Fox Studios in Australia in order to work with the same team responsible for the Oscar-winning Happy Feet.

"One of the reasons for doing Justice League in this country is the opportunity to bring back all the people we lost on Happy Feet who went overseas," Miller said. "We spent four years developing this talent and the cream of them left because they didn’t have another film to go on to …

"The idea is to say come back, start off on Justice League then move onto Happy Feet 2."

Miller described the film’s current state as "precarious" and said that Warner Bros. is looking overseas for filming locations, with Canada being the likeliest destination.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine production is starting in Australia while the Justice League are leaving it and heading for Wolverine’s home country. Don’t superheroes have any national pride anymore?

Monaghan and Henney Join ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’

Recently, Variety reported that Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan and Danial Henney, recently seen in the Korean drama My Father, have joined the cast of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. According to the article, Monaghan will play Barnell, a "mysterious character from Wolverine’s past who has the ability to manipulate energy and electricity."

Henney will take on the role of Agent Zero, "a member of the Weapon X program and an expert tracker with lethal marksman skills." Monaghan and Henney join a growing cast which already includes Hugh Jackman as, of course, Wolverine, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Taylor Kitsch, will.i.am, Lynn Collins and Ryan Reynolds.

The film, directed by Gavin Hood from a David Benioff script, which is shooting now in New Zealand, Australia and New Orleans, tells the story of Wolverine’s younger days and how he came to be the savage yet compassionate clawed mutant he is today.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theaters May 1st, 2009.

‘Doctor Who’ Dalek For Sale

Inmates at the Woodford Correctional Centre in Queensland, Australia, recently put the finishing touches on a full-size Dalek replica complete with wheels, voice changer and space for a ride-in occupant.

The "Doctor Who" villain took six months to build, and the finished product is currently being auctioned on eBay. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

Bidding starts at $3,000 and the auction ends on Feb. 8.

A reporter who recently took the Dalek out for a spin had the following to say about her experience:

You climb underneath, and in the back of the Dalek there’s a seat. You lift the seat up. I’m inside the Dalek. And then you look up and it’s got this voice-altering mechanism.

Ex-ter-min-ate! Ex-ter-min-ate!

If you’re tempted to place a bid, keep in mind that you’ll have to travel to Brisbane to pick up your prize. Imagine all the fun you’ll have getting it through airport security, though!

Oz to Justice League Filmmakers: Not Our Fault!

Oz to Justice League Filmmakers: Not Our Fault!

Following up on a previous Hollywood Reporter article in which Warner Bros. blamed the delays in production of a Justice League film on script issues and problems with potential Australian tax deductions, Variety now reports that the government of Australia has denied any fault in the matter. Apparently, Warner Bros.’ implication of the Aussies couldn’t have happened at a worse time, with the announcement hitting Australian wires on the first day of a government-sponsored celebration of American-Australian tourism and trade relations.

Australian officials were quick to issue a statement assuring the public that there was no conflict with tax incentives, but rather a conflict with "creative issues" related to the script. However, Variety‘s report would seem to indicate that the truth lies somewhere in the middle:

Pics seeking the uncapped 40% refund need to meet specific criteria to be deemed Aussie, and this is where "Justice League" appears to have failed to qualify, despite the studio having inked helmer George Miller in September and some Aussie thesps such as model Megan Gale.

Justice League Film Delayed Due to ‘Script Issues’

Justice League Film Delayed Due to ‘Script Issues’

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed today that filming of the George Miller-helmed Justice League will be delayed by Warner Bros. until after the writers’ strike. In its rationale for the delay, the studio cited a need for script rewrites as well as uncertainty regarding the film’s eligibility for tax incentives in Australia, where filming was planned.

"The feature was to have been a tentpole special effects extravaganza for Warners. Word leaked in the fall that the script, by Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney, was good but that subsequent passes, including the latest by Miller, had pacing issues and took the project in directions the studio wasn’t happy with."

According to the Reporter, the Justice League delay comes as welcome news to Christopher Nolan, director of Batman Begins and its upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight. Nolan was unhappy with the significant differences between the Batman character planned for the League and the Batman of his current franchise.
