Paradox Alice Being Released Digitally October 15

While the remaining male astronauts come to grips over their losses, one of the crew members spontaneously transforms into a woman (in a scene that is as shocking as 1979’s ALIEN). Each character tries to uncover the mystery of this horrific event. Was it an act of God, or a biological reaction for keeping the human race alive? As the men vie for the last female in existence, they begin to turn on one another. All of the questions come to a head in a shocking finale.

Frank Dirscherls the Wrath Returns with New Edition!

New Pulp Publisher, Trinity Comics has announced that Frank (Lance Star: Sky Ranger) Dirscherl’s debut novel, THE WRAITH, is now available to buy (in paperback) in a new revamped and represented edition. This is the first novel in The Wraith novel series.

Mad Max Trilogy Finally Comes to Blu-ray in June

Mad MaxThere are very few genre classics that have yet to come out on Blu-ray but this year, one of those voids is being filled by Warner Home Video, just ahead of the fourth installment in the series. Here are the official details:

Burbank, Calif. February 25, 2013 – Mad Max, the sci-fi franchise that introduced Mel Gibson to the world, will come together for the first time as a Blu-ray collection when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) debuts the Mad Max Trilogy on June 4th.

The three films – Mad Max (1979), Mad Max Road Warrior (1982) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) – are all set in the near-future in Australia. From the very first film, Oscar® winner George Miller (Happy Feet, 2006) proved a master at creating the gritty, bleak dystopian world and staging the incredible car stunts and crashes in the era when stuntmen, not computers, achieved the effects. All three movies starred Mel Gibson, virtually unknown until after the second film, as Max Rockatansky, a highway cop traveling through the Outback in a society descending into chaos. Proving that comics lead to juvenile deliquency, we have proof of the amazing things Smurfs will do to keep Smurfette in Smurfberries. And you thought Gargamel was in the wrong…

Four men dressed as Smurfs were arrested after attempting to steal a car and beating a man in Melbourne, Australia.

According to police reports, a 37-year-old man was walking out of a 7-Eleven just past midnight when he was approached by a man that looked like Papa Smurf, who asked for a cigarette. But the victim refused to light the cigarette before handing it over, and had to endure Papa Smurf’s wrath. He had also noticed that three other men, all similarly dressed as Smurfs, were attempting to simultaneously hotwire a car.

Australian police released the store’s surveillance video to find the four men responsible for the crimes. Three 19-year-olds and an 18-year-old came forward to admit to the crime and were promptly arrested.

I wanted to bring historical themes and parallels into the piece, such as with the opium wars in China, and the exploitation and destruction of indigenous races.
The second story, Love Never Ends, sees an ex-lover resurrected from the dead. When he learns his ex-wife is to be wed again, he seeks revenge. Unlike most zombie films, the zombie cannot simply be killed by a gunshot; it will take a lot more! I’ve also introduced new characters, such as the gypsy fortuneteller Mirella, and a new love interest, Carmelita. I also want to create more of an insight into Zorro over the series. Here, we learn of his penchant for seeing into the future.”

According to our fine friends at Comics Alliance, a gaggle of costumed cohorts congregated at the corner of Hollywood and Highland in in L.A. yesterday. In order to top Australia’s record for most people dressed in superhero costumes in one place at one time, a craigslist ad posted to bring as many cosplayers to the call as possible. While we weren’t able to confirm if more than 1245 vigilantes showed up between 12:30 and 12:45 PM as called for, we have faith in our American cosplayers. If someone out there on the left coast wants to tell us how it went, please share in the comments!

In a related story, not to be outdone by us silly Americans, last week, 519 Marios, Warios, Luigis, and WaLuigis gathered in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. They gathered not only to score the record of “Largest Gathering Of People Dresses As Mario”, but to celebrate the Fifth Hongshan Culture Festival and Chifeng Animation Festival. Oddly enough this explains how Mario is able to fall into various pits of death, and flaming traps in his misadventures… It simply appears if one of him “game overs”… he’s replaced!

So, should any of you fine ComicMix fans out there happen to have caught the cossies in L.A., or would like to beat some of the other odd records stored within the Guiness Book, let us know, and we’ll celebrate it!

Review: ‘Australia’

Australia DVDBaz Luhrman is a visual director. Couple him with fellow Aussies Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman; one would expect a strong story with terrific scenery and fine performances.

Instead, we got a faded postcard called Australia.  The overly long film, now out on DVD, is actually two predictable stories melded into one feature.  The first half is a remake of [[[The African Queen]]] repurposed as an American western set in the outback. The second half is a World War II adventure that sort of pits Jackman against the Japanese. Given its highly obvious story points, it’s hard to believe this is a product from the man who gave us [[[Moulin Rouge]]] and a fresh take on [[[Romeo and Juliet]]].

About the only thing unique about the story is the plight of the half-Caucasian/half-Aborigines children taken away by missionaries during this era to have the “savage” beaten out of them.  As a result, the most interesting characters in the film are the “creamy” Nullah and his silent grandfather King George (played by the veteran David Gulpilil).

Jackman may never win an Oscar for his work, but he’s a versatile, entertaining actor who handles action and romance with equal aplomb.  His Droper smolders throughout the movie and his understanding of the aboriginal people is sympathetic in contrast to just about every other Caucasian in the movie.

Kidman’s Lady Sarah goes from spoiled Englishwoman to gun-toting, hard drinking native without any in-between steps and feels unnatural.  Instead of a nuanced performance, which she’s capable of, she feels like she did this to work from home and not that she had any real affinity for the role or story.

Luhrman also seems more interested in the landscape of his native land than the performances which are more two-dimension than we’re used to. The pacing is languid, even for the action sequences, and overall the movie just lays there. It did not perform well at the box office and 20th Century-Fox apparently lost faith in the film which resulted in a DVD that comes with barely any extras.  There are trailers (and not one for [[[Wolverine]]]) and two deleted scenes, neither of which substantively changes the movie.
