‘North Wind’ is Latest BOOM! Book Optioned

After a successful run of comics sales, fueled in part by a special release on MySpace, the series North Wind has been picked up by Hollywood. The book follows the few people living in California after global warming brings on a new ice age and covers sunny LA in snow and ice.

According to a press release from BOOM!, the rights were picked up by Davis Entertainment, which previously ushered I, Robot, Eragon and Alien vs. Predator to movie screens. The screenplay will be written by series writer David DiGilio, who previously created Eight Below and the ABC show Traveler.

BOOM! has a few other properties in development, including the series Tag, Talent and The Foundation and the graphic novel 10.

North Wind caused a stir among retailers when BOOM! did a simultaneous release, putting issues up on MySpace Comics (you can read them right here). But spokesman Chip Mosher told me the series ended up exceeding sales expectations.

After a week full of toys & more toys, it is good to expand our digital horizons in some other areas. For example:

ABC is adding to your Oscar Party tonight with increased video coverage of the Academy Awards show. Starting later tonight, there will be more behind-the-scenes interviews, interactive features and even a user-generated feature encouraging fans to upload their own acceptance speeches.

NBC is now fully underway, streaming full episodes of vintage TV shows this month for free and select NBC Cable Entertainment sites. Included among the classics, look for The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Night Gallery on NBC.com, the original Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers on SciFi.com, Swamp Thing and The Crow: City of Angels on ChillerTV.com and Kojak and Miami Vice on SleuthChannel.com.

DIC Entertainment has launched its first 24/7 online video channel. we found this interesting because it offers a range of new and classic titles like Dino Squad, Inspector Gadget, The Littles, Liberty’s Kids, and the live-action series Cake among others.  Later on this year, look for the launch of new property websites for DIC brands, such as Eloise, Beginner’s Bible, and Inspector Gadget.

Brian K. Vaughan on Lost and Y: the Last Man

Another day, another tease regarding this week’s season premiere of Lost and the impending end of Y: The Last Man.

New York Magazine‘s pop culture blog, Vulture, posted this brief interview with writer Brian K. Vaughan about his uber-popular television and comics projects. The interview provides some context for Vaughan’s decision to off one of the series’ main characters in a recent issue, as well as some insight regarding his favorite characters.

All of that, and some thoughts on the possibility of a spin-off series:

No. I am truly washing my hands. Unless I’m in really dire financial straits and I have to do an Ampersand the Monkey spinoff.

As far as the passengers of Oceanic Flight 813, Vaughan manages to keep the secrets of Lost Season Four, well… secret. And for good reason:

I think if I were to answer too specifically, a future version of myself would appear and assassinate me.

Lost airs Thursday, Jan. 31 on ABC at 8 PM (EST).

On a Saturday in 1973 at about 8:56 in the morning, right after Super Friends on ABC, kids were introduced to a new hero, Zero.

This was the first appearance of Multiplication Rock, brought to you by Nabisco ("You’ll find quality in our corner"). It was the beginning of Schoolhouse Rock, which taught millions of kids across the country multiplication, grammar, history, science, and finances.

So let’s all take a few minutes and watch the video for the first song written for the project, and give thanks for all those lessons learned– it’s okay to sing along, you know how it goes:

Like the medium or not, you do have to admit that there are a lot of similarities between pro wrestling and comics. In years past, there hasn’t been a successful bridge between the two, but creator Mike Kingston is taking a totally new approach with his Headlocked series. If you gaze at ABC’s fall schedule, all of a sudden you’ll find a show called Samantha Who? This is not another Doctor Who spin-off, and star Christina Applegate is probably not the new companion.

This show was originally titled Sam I Am until the Dr. Seuss estate (Private Snafu‘s Theodore Geisel) said something to the effect of "are you out of your damn mind?" So the Mouse Network changed it to Samantha Be Good. It’s amazing how many people at Disney never heard of George and Ira Gershwin or Chuck Berry, but I guess eventually somebody squawked.

So the alphabet geniuses came up with Samantha Who? Since it’s their third generation, I assume the show is actually a tribute to Jon Pertwee.

“Cavemen” make the leap

You know those cavemen who hawk insurance on teevee? Well, now you’ve got to give them proper respect. They’re getting their own sitcom pilot.

According to Variety, ABC announced they are planning to do a series pilot based upon the Geico commercials created by Joe Lawson, the copywriter who created the original spots. If available, Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber will be offered the chance to reprise their roles in the new series.

No word yet on who might be sponsoring the series. Maybe State Farm?
