The Maze Runner, based on James Dashner’s novel, comes out in theaters tomorrow. Yay! Another YA dystopian novel made into a movie! Maddy reviews the book and is encouraged by the author’s enthusiasm of the movie (Percy Jackson has emotionally scarred her), while Anya reviews Dylan O’Brien. Anya also warns that you better stay clear of Maddy and her tendency for spoilers!
Being a kid is hard. You don’t know who you are exactly, but it’s really important that you find out where you fit in. So, we imagine it was especially hard for Liz Prince when she was growing up because she wasn’t a girly girl who wanted to play dolls and wear dresses and yet she also wasn’t a boy. In her new graphic memoir, Tomboy, she takes us on her journey to find a happy medium between gender norm stereotypes. It’s funny and frustrating and in the end offers hope that eventually we will all find our niche. It’s also a great reminder that you don’t have to be girly to be a girl.
There’s a misconception that the Power Rangers are just for little kids or for boys (or Karen Gillan – you saw her ice bucket challenge, right?), but we think the cast of Saban’s Power Rangers Super Megaforce offers a little something for everyone. The Tweeks are big fans of Doctor Who, but they are not fans of change. It was scary times going into the Season 8 Premiere episode “Deep Breath” because Peter Capaldi looked pretty stern and serious in the promo pictures. Could The Tweeks possibly love a doctor with those eyebrows when the last one had no eyebrows at all? Watch this episode and see if the 12th Doctor is indeed Tweeks Approved.
As Tweeks! viewers know, Raina Telgemeier is one of our all-time favorite authors, so we were excited from the second we heard she would be writing another book about the autobiographical characters from Smile. And then when we found it was called Sisters?! How much more perfect does it get, right? So, the question is, does Sisters – In stores today! – hold up to the hype? Um, yes! Get yourself to a bookstore, tweens!
Raina Telgemeier just might be the best middle grade author in the whole world. She’s also probably the nicest author in the whole world…and maybe even the nicest person ever. During San Diego Comic Con, she took some time to sit down with us to talk about her new book Sisters (check out our review Tuesday!), her other books, what it’s like to write graphic novels for kids and how to get started as a comic artist and writer. We ask her all the questions her readers want to know in this in-depth interview. We love our job!
One of the best parts of Comic Con International was getting to talk to so many women working in the comics industry. Anne Toole was one of those women geek girls like us can aspire to. She not only is an Emmy-winning writer of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, but she also writes video games (who knew that was a thing?!) and has a new monthly comic series coming out from Lion Forge/Roar this October called Crystal Cadets (Art & covers by Katie O’Neill Colors by Paulina Ganucheau) which we are all over!

Maddy saw Guardians of the Galaxy opening weekend and can’t wait to share her love of Rocket Raccoon and Groot with the whole world. Anya, on the other hand was more enthusiastic about sleeping in, so the only thing she can share this week is what she knows about of infinity stones/gems. There also may or may not be some sisterly labeling of which twin is more like Nebula and which, by default, is then Gamora.
As the Tweeks recover from their whirlwind Comic Con 2014, here’s a recap of their adventures at the San Diego Convention Center. There was a lot of fan girl apparel, comic books, and toys purchased, as well as many interviews conducted. Keep a look out for more coverage on their hometown Con.
We know this is totally a #FirstWorldProblem, but getting one’s schedule set for Comic Con is really stressful. With the SDCC app and an Excel spreadsheet in hand, we’re scurrying around the San Diego Convention Center right now in search of scoops (of probably both ice cream and news), but here’s a look at hard tween geek choices that had to be made and some very cool activities downtown.
