John Ostrander

John Ostrander started his career as a professional writer as a playwright. His best known effort, Bloody Bess, was directed by Stuart Gordon, and starred Dennis Franz, Joe Mantegna, William J. Norris, Meshach Taylor and Joe Mantegna. He has written some of the most important influential comic books of the past 25 years, including Batman, The Spectre, Manhunter, Firestorm, Hawkman, Suicide Squad, Wasteland, X-Men, and The Punisher, as well as Star Wars comics for Dark Horse. New episodes of his creator-owned series, GrimJack, which was first published by First Comics in the 1980s, appear every week on ComicMix.

  1. June has answered this question… or more accurately, Rocky has answered it, in interviews over the years. Rocky is definitely male. Because that’s what his mother told him personally.

    To point up what a supreme VO artist Ms. Foray was – the “Bullwinkle” tracks were recorded in, essentially, a single take, with everyone standing around the mike and performing a whole scene straight through. No punching in, no overdubs, nothing. Live radio drama, basically.

    Part of the comedic style was that characters would step on each others’ lines, just like people talk in what we laughingly refer to as the Real World.

    Listen sometime and pay attention to how often Rocky and Natasha would step on each others’ lines. And remember it was a single take with no cuts or overdubs.

    She appeared as herself on the MTM show “The Duck Factory”.

    And in an interview a few years back, she said that the performance the most people seem to recall is the one where she had one single line, as a character who appeared for only a few seconds, but it’s the one that people remember: “Santy Claus, why, why are you taking our Christmas tree, why?”
