Joe, I thought you might mention that Denver baker who refused to see a weeding cake to a gay couple on account of being gay is against his religion. It’s going to the Supreme Court.

My first inclination is to say that the best way for the couple to protest is to take their business elsewhere…money talks, y’know?

Then my second thought was…it begins there…where does it stop? With pink triangle patches on the clothes of anyone who is gay? With crescents on the clothes of Muslims? With Stars of David on the coats of Jews (again?)

Then yesterday I heard that the Supreme Court backed that church that wanted the state to pay for a repaving of their playground. When the state refused, and its refusal was upheld by the lower court, the church took it to the Supreme Court, which said that since the church was specifically asking for money from the state for a religious purpose, it agreed with the church, and the State must pay for the repaving of the playground. (This is a little wandering, I know…forgive me, I’m tired from working all day.)

Anyway, my first inclination on this case was to say, “Why doesn’t the Church pay for it? The Church is richer than God.” Then I thought, “Well, this church may not be a Catholic church.” Then I thought, “Why doesn’t the Church hold a fundraiser to raise money for a new pavement? Why should the State pay for it out of funds from taxes? The Church, no matter the denomination, doesn’t pay taxes. Why should they get, in effect, free money?”

And then I thought…what the fuck is happening in this country?
