As a pacifist I’m put off by the the worship of violence and war in the new Wonder Woman movie. But then that is a big part of what Hollywood is there for. And to be sure, it’s not the whole story. If you only read one book in the rest of your life, I suggest The Alphabet Versus the Goddess by Leonard Shlain. It brings great clarity and insight to the role of the elimination of Goddesses by male monotheism as foundational to the 5,000 year old theory and practice of patriarchy. Watch out Steve Mnunchin you might just be helping the genie get out of the bottle.

Frank, I’m a pacifist, too, but I frequently enjoy pretend violence, because my pacifism does not eliminate my violent emotions. I did notice that, in this movie, Wonder Woman took out the weapons first and, only when that failed to stop enemy soldiers, did she fight humans.

I’m not familiar with Shlain’s book, but Barbara Walker’s Women’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets perhaps covers similar ground.

Frank, a great novel about the elimination of the Goddess by the Church is THE MISTS OF AVALON, by Marion Zimmer Bradley, in which she uses the Arthurian legend to demonstrate how the matriarchal religion was warred against by the early Church.

I forgot to add….the Church representing the patriarchy.
