Yeah, I’d like to say that only visited the old ‘head shops’ to purchase underground comics, but I have to be honest here. It was while purchasing other items that I discovered the underground newspapers and comix. Already being a fan of mainstream comics it was pretty eye-opening to find these other books and artists who were taking the medium into places most of us had never seen before. Although, once again being too honest, I had seen a few Tijuana Bibles in my teens so I can’t say that I was shocked by the undergrounds more adult nature.

Also, I’ve got to admit that being a child of that era it has always surprised me that it has taken so long for the laws governing marijuana to shift so far. I think back in the Sixties many of us used to think it would probably only be a few years before things lightened up on grass.

Lenny Bruce said that weed would be legal within five years because all of the lawyers he knew smoked it. Well, Lenny knew a LOT of lawyers, but he’s been dead for 50 years this past August and only now are we getting around to it. The idea that we spend some four BILLION dollars a year enforcing these laws and incarcerating users — giving them a life-destroying felony record all the while — is simply beyond the pale.

As for Tijuana Bibles affecting one’s outrage or lack thereof of underground comix, Steve, I direct your attention to Zap Comix #4.

      Um Tut Sut.
