Martha Thomases: 4DX, Batman’s Religion, and Me

Martha Thomases

Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

I think that the common wisdom is that the Waynes were probably Episcopalian, so Martha would have probably converted from the Jewish faith. Of course there is lots of room for debate.

Hey, Martha, it’s so funny that your column speaks about Martha Wayne’s heritage. Last night as the family Rosh Hashanah feast, my sister-in-law told us that she had my niece’s DNA genetic markers done on Ancestry. com. Turns out that Isabel is 49% Polish, Russian, and Jewish. The other half is from her mom, whose ancestry, considering Puerto Rico’s history, is Spanish, Taino (I’m not sure of the spelling, but it’s the native Puerto Rico marker, meaning that some part of her ancestry is the original inhabitants of the island), and the Congo. There’s also some English and/or German in there.

But what I found interesting is that Ancestry separates Polish and Russian from Jewish–our family is from that part of Poland and Russia that bounced back and forth between the two countries, so that makes sense–but that being “Jewish” has individual genetic markers. Made me think: so does that mean that “Jewish” IS its own ethnicity as well as being a religion? Perhaps if the ancestry could be followed back far enough, it would lead to somewhere in the Middle East?

Also, regarding your experience with 4DX: being an equestrienne, I love the smell of horses!
