When I was in college, lo, those many years ago, one of the books that my English 101 professor assigned was THE PLAYBOY COLLEGE READER. It was a fantastic collection of all the many incredible interviews with the major thinkers of the late 60’s up until 1971 (the year I was a freshman in college): Alex Haley, James Baldwin, Marshall McLuhan, John Steinbaeck, Norman Mailer, Alan Watts, and 23 others. It also included the many brilliant cartoons of Gahan Wilson, Jules Ffeifer, Shel Silverstein, Harvey Kurtzman and others. IT WAS THE BEST ENGLISH “TEXTBOOK” that I ever had.

I knew that PLAYBOY was ending their “Playmate of the Month” run–which frankly, never insulted me, as a kid (when I discovered my Dad’s stockpile of Playboys(, I just thought the girls were beautiful, I wanted to grow up to be beautiful like them, and also, those pictures gave me a sense of what to expect my body to look like after I “grew up,” in terms of developing breasts and pubic hair–but I had no idea they were ending their brilliant cartoons. That, im-no-so-ho, is one DUMB idea.

    Great column, Mike!

P.S. I’ve heen hearing wonderful things about Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon’s work on LEGEND OF WONDER WOMAN. I’m definitely picking it up!
