  1. Your three elements (the color purple, fire, and talking apes) were only a part of what I understood to be the Master list. Mark Waid stated in an issue of Secret Origins that list was seven-fold: your three, as well as tears, dinosaurs, motorcycles, and a boldly worded question (in fact, ‘talking’ wasn’t listed as a requirement for apes although I doubt it hurt). He went so far as to commission a cover for Secret Origins, devoted that month to three well-known simians, that utilized all seven components in one image: purple fire blazing around dinosaurs who were chasing cycle-riding gorillas pursuing a crying chimpanzee holding a freshly-used matchbook, accompanied by the bold caption, “Why is this chimpanzee crying?” I’m told that issue sold horribly.
