John Ostrander

John Ostrander started his career as a professional writer as a playwright. His best known effort, Bloody Bess, was directed by Stuart Gordon, and starred Dennis Franz, Joe Mantegna, William J. Norris, Meshach Taylor and Joe Mantegna. He has written some of the most important influential comic books of the past 25 years, including Batman, The Spectre, Manhunter, Firestorm, Hawkman, Suicide Squad, Wasteland, X-Men, and The Punisher, as well as Star Wars comics for Dark Horse. New episodes of his creator-owned series, GrimJack, which was first published by First Comics in the 1980s, appear every week on ComicMix.

    John, my niece adores DR. WHO; she discovered it when Matt Smith was the Doctor, 5 years ago now, which made her about 9 or 10 then–ALL her friends were talking about it. So my brother got all the DVD’s up to that moment and they binged on the show from Christopher Eccleston’s debut…

    The “monsters” did not scare her. The Daleks were her favorite (we had a running argument for a while about that, since I think the Weeping Angels were the scariest), and she ran around the house crying EX-TERM-IN-ATE! even when I wasn’t there.

    This bullshit about “protecting the children” is such, well, bullshit–when they can turn on the TV and see a hell of a lot more scarier stuff in the real world than “deranged pepper shakers.” And even if parents try to protect them from the events in this scary real world, they find out anyway…they do not live in a bubble.
