John Ostrander

John Ostrander started his career as a professional writer as a playwright. His best known effort, Bloody Bess, was directed by Stuart Gordon, and starred Dennis Franz, Joe Mantegna, William J. Norris, Meshach Taylor and Joe Mantegna. He has written some of the most important influential comic books of the past 25 years, including Batman, The Spectre, Manhunter, Firestorm, Hawkman, Suicide Squad, Wasteland, X-Men, and The Punisher, as well as Star Wars comics for Dark Horse. New episodes of his creator-owned series, GrimJack, which was first published by First Comics in the 1980s, appear every week on ComicMix.

    Yeah, I get that, John. About the gut reaction. About hitting back, hard.

    And, yeah, I get that “reasoned” response, too. (But does that work against fanatics?)

    And, yeah, I get the religious Apocalypse thing, too. I keep thinking that I once read that the “final battle” will start in Syria, and end on the plains of Meggido (from when the word “Armeggedon” comes–and is it one “g” or two? I can never remember) which is in modern-day Israel.

    And I keep singing “it’s the end of the world as we know it,” too.

    Only I don’t feel fine.

    Great column as always. You’re right about ISIS, they want the world to end but they also need money to do it. I just read France is retaliating, I jist hope that is not them getting what they want.
