    Silly framing device.

Though who said ST:TNG “launched cable”??? It ran on broadcast tv stations via syndication.

I know Voyager “launched” UPN, (and Enterprise crashed it).

The plans for the new show to be on CBS.com’s paid service depends on that service even being around in a year. Given how the majority of the other broadcast network’s shows appear on Hulu for the same price. I think CBS will have a hard time picking up subscribers. Star Trek alone won’t change that. Will CBS be willing to sink a lot of money into Trek as a loss leader for online subscriptions? Not for too long.

If the paid CBS.com plan fails. The Trek series may be

    A. Cancelled,
    B. Moved to Showtime.com (maybe along with all of CBS.com),
    C. Moved to broadcast, (along with Supergirl, CBS can build a reputation for being more than the police procedural network.)
    D. Streaming rights put up for sale to some other entity (Netflix/Amazon/Hulu)

Molly, I didn’t hate INTO DARKNESS. I was just incredibly annoyed that Abrams went the boring route of Khan Noonian Singh while totally denying it (okay, he had to). In my column about the movie, I wrote that it showed either a total lack of imagination, or, more probably, im-not-so-ho, a dictate from Paramount as to who the villain would be in order to bring in the most filmgoers–familiarity with Khan being the axis point on which the pendulum swung, since THE WRATH OF KHAN was “the” ST movie in the public’s eye, thanks to Ricardo Montabalm’s superb performance.

I still think Gary Mitchell as the “bad” guy would rock!
