My Dad was born in Berwyn in 1922 and grew up there. His grandfather owned a saloon in Cicero which (if i understand correctly) had to close for a few hours Sunday mornings. One Sunday great-grandad re-opened, and discovered that a patron had apparently passed out under one of the back tables and had been treed on top of the bar by the dog he let have the run of the place when it was closed.

    The patron? Al Cermak.

(I wish i’d known my dad’s grandfathers – both were Bohemian immigrants – one of them a draft-dodger.)

So i have a certain appreciation for Chicago political theatre.

But i’ve lived in Georgia for forty-plus years, the state that had three governors for a while; the state where, when a downstate woolhat audience member demanded to know “Did you really steal all that money like them Atlanta papers say?”, the response that got an ovation was “Yes – but I stole it FOR YOU!”

And i used to spend a lot of time in New Orleans with my friends there, so i have a certain appreciation for the way they do things there – “Vote for the crook – It’s important!”

SO i REALLY appreciate good political theatre.

Those guys up in Michigan are making a valiant attempt, but they’re not up to my standards yet.
