Martha Thomases, Mistress of the Universe?

Martha Thomases

Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

“Rather, let’s hear them talk about how issues – climate change, economic inequality, the Middle East, reproductive rights, the role of religion in the legal system, immigration – affect the kinds of stories they tell.”

Oh, how I wish the real candidates would REALLY do this–in terms of how these issues affect their politics–instead of just issuing sound bites and scripted responses.

    Great, great column, Martha!

Great read and I agree. There have been a few stories that “rustled my jimmies” reading them but I always benefited from the experience, if only to expose myself to views I wouldn’t normally come across.

I really think you’ve got a fantastic idea here. I’d certainly love to hear creators share their views on the world around them at panels, as it affects us all, although in this environment of knee jerk reactions and limited “tweet” and “status” platforms, it’d be a hard sell. Pity.
