I think my favourite Riddler story ever was the one in one of the “Adventures” titles where he realises that matching wits with Batman is his real passion, but that it doesn’t necessarily need to involve getting his lights punched out – and begins sending Batman riddles with clues to other people’s crimes.

…and {SPOILER} when Batman tracks him down because he included a meta-riddle in his riddles he didn’t even realise was there … first he starts to fight … then stops and tells Batman to take him back to Arkham, because anyone who would do that is, by definition, crazy.

And my favourite description of the Riddler is the one the late Dennis Dolbear came up with after we’d both seen Batman Forever: “…the Riddler’s basically a roadshow Joker for Batman to keep in shape on until the real Joker busts out of Arkham again.”
