Michael Davis: Who’s Sorry Now?
It’s been a while since I’ve taken someone to task with a good old fashion rant, so…
Last week I missed my ComicMix deadline.
Not that anyone noticed.
Usually when I missed a deadline it’s because of illness or stupidity.
Not that anyone cares.
I drive myself pretty hard and take on a lot of stuff and there are times when I drive myself too hard. When those way to often moments happen I’m subject to the worst migraines and I’m unable to work.
How bad are these headaches? You know the expression; ‘I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy?’ Well I would, because I’m just that kind of bastard. If I miss a deadline because of illness a migraine is almost certain to be the reason.
I did not miss list week’s deadline because I was ill. So that leaves being stupid.
On very rare occasions I always write my articles a day or two before I have to send them in. I’d like (so would ComicMix) to get them in Sunday but Monday morning is my fail safe. I’m not writing them last minute as I’m sure most will think. I’m waiting as long as I can because I draw most of my rants from current events and I’d like to be current.
I hate, with a passion, not be able to throw my two cents in on subjects that people are talking about in the now. It seems every time I think I’m safe from any breaking news I’m fucked. Case in point when some comic book racists were losing their minds over the Johnny Storm casting I had already finished articles for ComicMix and Bleeding Cool so I chimed in a week later on both sites.
Yeah—I really got burned on that one. Heh. Its not to me, but I can see why some people would think waiting so long could be stupid if only because I’m so swamped with work. So, I get that.
I did not miss list week’s deadline because I was stupid.
Before I continue I’d like to say something about deadlines-WHY I miss deadlines does not mean missing them are not my fault.
They are.
If I miss a deadline it’s my fault regardless of why. A reason is not an excuse.
Before some hater says it I’ll say it myself, missing deadlines are my fault so that means I’m stupid and / or I make myself sick.
No, a reason is not an excuse-that’s for me-don’t hold my standards up as the norm in comics. I recently fired an artist who got drunk, missed his deadline, and thought that was a perfectly good excuse. When he finally called me two days after he swore he emailed the work (BULLSHIT) he was surprised he was fired.
“I got drunk on New Year’s Eve, I’m sorry it was all my fault.”
That, I would have respected, that I would have understood, that would have kept his job. That is not what I got.
“I got drunk on New Year’s Eve, been hung over since, it’s not my fault.”
That’s what I got.
For me there are no excuses but some reasons are better than others.
A flooded house is a pretty good reason right? I thought so until I saw my column for Bleeding Cool written and SENT LAST week was, for some white person in London reason, run on Tuesday instead of Friday.
Yep—it ran Tuesday, the day my ComicMix articles run, unless I blow the deadline.
My BC piece runs on Tuesday, which I’m sure CM editors saw and thought was a ‘fuck ComicMix ‘ from me. It wasn’t. Neither was it a ‘fuck CM fans’ from me.
It was a perfect storm of shit that caused all sorts of bad thing to happen to me last week.
This is my long-winded way of apologizing to the editors and fans that may have missed my rants or thought I take what I do here at ComicMix lightly.
I don’t. I missed my deadline because my home was flooded pretty bad.
That’s a reason, not an excuse. I missed a deadline, broke a weekly promise and regardless if you like my stuff or hate it, I respect the time you take to read me.
Again—my apologies.
