The Law Is A Ass #310: Avengers A.I.: Where Intelligence Really Is Artificial

Bob Ingersoll

By day Bob Ingersoll was an attorney in the Cuyahoga County Public Defender Office, Appellate Division in Cleveland, Ohio, until he retired in 2009. But in the “Real World” he has also been a freelance writer since 1975, when he sold his first comic-book story to the late, lamented Charlton Comics. He’s still at it and, in addition to his long-running column “The Law Is a Ass” has sold stories to DC, Marvel, Innovation, Now Comics, Comico, Kitchen Sink and others; as well as co-authoring the novels Captain America: Liberty’s Torch and Star Trek: The Case of the Colonist’s Corpse. Bob is married with children, which is about as close to Al Bundy as he cares to get.

  1. And given SHIELD’s role as the UN’s law-enforcement device/permanent standing military, one wonders what they got up to in the other nations signed onto the SHIELD Treaty…

Don’t insult Artificial Intelligence by comparing it to Congress.

Congress is a classic example of Artificial Stupidity.

…and an extension to even greater lengths of that old observation by Sour Sam Clemens:

In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made school boards.

  3. I have to wonder whether or not in a boardroom or committee chamber somewhere, a group of people are discussing actual protocols for when the Singularity hits and we really do see programs that approach electronic sentience. I don’t see it happening for decades, but having at least a framework of a plan in place might be a good idea. I think the Turing Test might not be enough

This brings to mind that old Avengers West Coast storyline about the Vision. The Vision had taken over the U.S. capability to launch its nuclear missiles, so a number of governments got together to confiscate him long enough to erase his mind completely. When the Scarlet Witch (his wife) screamed about it, his components were returned, and she was told not to worry, that she could reprogram the now mindless machine however she saw fit. Those governments didn’t recognize him as a person.

So there is a long-standing bias in the Marvel Universe against artificial intelligences.
