It seemed likely to me at the time (ans still does) that Dozier and Semple had nothing but contempt for comics in general and Batman in particular.

  2. I dunno, I think Dozier tried as hard as he could. He had three characters he wanted to go with – Batman, Dick Tracy and the Green Hornet. He went with Batman, but they shot a pilot for Dick Tracy:

Note how similar in look and tone it is to the Batman series, right down to the style of the animated credits.

They tried a more serious take on Batman, but test audiences were whelmed. It was only when they “explained” that the show was supposed to be camp did they “get” it. They went with what worked, and you can scarcely fault them.

They went with the more played-straight Green Hornet, but it never caught on, save for the spectacular charisma of Bruce Lee. Dozier learned his lesson and went full-goose bozo (bordering on ridiculous) for his pilot for Wonder Woman. It was more like the bat-wannabes captain Nice and Mr. Teriffic – pure comedy, not even camp.

Best thing that came out of the 60s Batman was the Avengers episode “The Winged Avenger”.

    Eee-URP!
