I forget what class i was in when the news came over the school PA; i was fifteen.

The high school was in South Carolina; i lived near a town so small that its one movie theatre had closed four years earlier. (More recently, it was at least for a while the fastest-growing urban area in the US; it has its own IMAX these days.)

I heard later that one of my contemporaries had cheered aloud in class at the news of JFK’s death.

One of the happiest days in my life was the day, four years later, almost to the day, when i left that place to join the Navy.

    Beautiful, John.

And by the way, I swear by all that’s holy that I didn’t read your column before I wrote mine. :-)
