One of my favorite movies, and I remember seeing it in the movies (I was 9-going-on-10) with my parents and brother. The soundtrack is just as iconic as Steve McQueen’s motorcycle riding–hey, Bob, one thing you didn’t mention is that McQueen did all his own riding and stunts–and it’s playing in my head right now.

I found the original paperback in a used book store…I highly recommend it!

    Nice work, Bob!

McQueen did not do the fence jump.

OTOH, he was also the German guy on a motorcycle chasing him…

    Quoting the IMDB “Trivia page:

Steve McQueen also personally attempted the jump across the border fence, but crashed. The jump was successfully performed by Bud Ekins.

Although Steve McQueen did his own motorcycle riding, there was one stunt he did not perform: the hair-raising 60-foot jump over a fence. This was done by McQueen’s friend Bud Ekins, who was managing a Los Angeles-area motorcycle shop when recruited for the stunt. It was the beginning of a new career for Ekins, as he later doubled for McQueen in Bullitt and did much of the motorcycle riding on the television series CHiPs.

(McQueen also didn’t do as much of the driving in “Bullitt” as most people thing he did, either.)
