Emily S. Whitten: Awesomely Terrible Movies I Love – Equilibrium

Emily S. Whitten

Emily S. Whitten writes everything from news, reviews, and interviews to how-tos, con round-ups, and opinion pieces for ComicMix and others; as well as comics featured on ComicMix, MTV.com, and Reelz.com; and occasionally even award-winning poetry and fiction. When she's not writing for fun or profit, she’s sharing geeky thoughts on the Fantastic Forum radio show and podcast Made of Fail. Emily is a convention organizer and consultant, and co-chair of the fourth North American Discworld Convention, which she co-founded. She has been Program Coordinator for Awesome Con and staff for several genre cons. Emily is a program moderator for Awesome Con and Fan2Sea; and you might also recognize her from her days of answering questions online as her alter-ego, Ask Deadpool. In her copious spare time, Emily enjoys crafting and cosplay, and looking after the cutest three-legged dwarf hamster in the world, ElliePuff. Oh, and when she's not doing all that, Emily is an active member of The National Press Club and holds down a 9-to-5 as a senior attorney for the federal government - although that may just be her superheroine cover identity.

So what you’re saying is that a movie, which you obviously found great, isn’t great since the general opinion is such that it isn’t one? Way to conform Emily.

Haha, no, that’s not at all what I’m saying, if you read the column I wrote.

I’m saying that because the movie has so many ridiculous and/or unbelievable bits warring with whatever better elements are present, and yet it takes itself so seriously overall, it is fun to watch; but clearly not for the reasons intended by the writer/director. It is, in other words, and in my personal opinion, so bad it’s good. That’s a totally different thing than it being a great movie.

Also, prior to this column I had no idea as to the “general opinion” of this movie (and I still really don’t, other than what you say here and 5 minutes on IMDB in which I saw a couple of random viewer opinions). I have no desire to either conform or not conform. I wrote what I thought, after watching the movie. My views, not views written to please anyone.

Well, it got a 37% rating on RottenTomatoes.com.

The user comments on the negative reviews are hilarious, particularly one guy who apparently pasted the same long and incoherent rant beginning

You fucking retard. Did you watch this movie?

Oops. That was supposed to say “…to almost every negative review, regardless of what the review actually says” after the quote.
