I would love to see a new Dresden Files show. The industry has become more accepting of long-running serialized stories with a specific direction and plot.

…man, I wonder what Seasons 4 and 5 of Babylon 5 would be like if they were made today.

Exactly. And more accepting of genre series stories that don’t throw everything at you in the first three episodes.

Plus, special effects get better (and cheaper) all the time. That could give the magic more oomph when needed without breaking the bank.

      Syfyyyyyy? Hehehe.

Dresden would work better either on one of the premium cable networks or as a movie. As you mentioned, the network show felt watered down.

    • Emily S. Whitten says:

That’s actually a pretty good thought. Despite the fact that I don’t HAVE those premium channels, having a show on one of them would probably ensure a somewhat higher quality product, at least.

I was house sitting for friends who had the TV series box set and every evening after work for several days watching it. I loved it enough to start reading the books and I’m up to Blood Rites now. I’m pacing them out and reading one a month.

Although I agree that I wish they’d shown more of the complexity of the novels in the show (Plus, the TV series needs 100% more Mister) I like the TV series better on the whole. A lot of it is Terrance Mann as Bob. TV!Bob is a lot more fun than he’s been in any of the novels yet and I really loved the relationship he had with Harry, something that’s missing from the books.

We get to see Dresden from the outside in the TV series and seeing other’s reactions to him really makes a difference in how I relate to him as a character.

I just finished Blood Rites though and I enjoyed it more than I have the last 2 or 3 so the book series may win out yet.

I agree with your points that the TV!Bob/Dresden relationship was excellent, and that seeing Dresden from others’ viewpoints adds to the enjoyment of the show. I think there were a lot of good points to the show; I’d just have liked to see more.

The books seem to increase in quality as time goes on, as with many books that are written as a series over time. :)

Hi Emily, Me again – a great fan of Dresden Files on telly [particularly loved Terrence Mann as Bob, but I love him in musicals – great voice – as well]. The books are un-put-down-able, but I also get upset with the level of violence [yes, I know, it’s fiction, but I’m easily pulled into a good book]. I’d love to see the TV show revived with the same cast. Still re-watch Firefly. Cheers, Kid, Wolffie

    • Emily S. Whitten says:

I knoooowww. The violence, and especially how sometime there’s permanent or long-term harm, makes me wince; but it also makes it feel more “real” in a book about magic…so I think without it the series might suffer, actually.

I seriously wouldn’t mind the series being revived with the same cast but some improvements; or a new cast/series.

      Ah, Firefly. :D

You should check out the Marla Mason books by TA Pratt. I want those made into a TV show, but I fear what the result would be.
