    I liked GREEN HORNET.

Welcome to the club. Star Trek is great. The Original Series got canceled at the perfect time to maintain it’s quality and mystique. There are some cliche elements to the show. But Star Trek actually BUILT several of those cliches. And that’s saying something.

You have to watch SEARCH FOR SPOCK just for narrative reasons. It’s not that it’s a good film or anywhere near the best of the series but it makes the NEXT film, THE VOYAGE HOME, understandable and that film is GREAT fun. And then you need to stop watching TREK films because they seriously decline in quality.

    Then go watch DOCTOR WHO.

I must second this recommendation. Ignore the concept that there were any Trek movies after IV (although I didn’t think First Contact was that gods-awful, other than the corruption of Data’s character), but do watch III and IV for the narrative. Together with II, they make a sort of trilogy.

Plus IV has some good cheesy gags, and the wondrous sight of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey-class frigate facing off against a Soviet whaling ship… :)

I know if falls into the cliche of even numbered Trek movies = good, odd numbers = sucked. But The Undiscovered Country (#6) and First Contact (Next Generation #2) were both really good.

Stories built around savory plots and moral ambiguity and great character moments, which also had action sequences and special effects.

Martha, I want a detailed explanation of how you found anything to like about green hornet.

John, I intend to. Minus the who. I’ve tried. But man, I can’t get into it. Yet.

  6. Reg says:

To paraphrase the great William Marshall (ne’ Richard Daystrom)…”Star Trek is great. We are great.” http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Richard_Daystrom

And now that you have joined the family, a little guidance is in order…. We are Trekkers….not trekkies. Thus endeth the lesson. :-)

p.s. Just wait till you bite the DS9 apple.

    • Noted Reg. And truth be told, I’d attempted several times at DS9. For some reason, I found the Ferenghi (?) to be a little… Lucas-like in their obvious stereotype. I think for now, slowly, I plan on watching TOS, and enjoying it. From there? We’ll see what tickles my phasers.

      • Reg says:

Re: “Lucas-like” Heh. Well yeaaah…there is that…but no more so than the Klingons represent the ‘thug-life’ caste of the universe. Knawmean? :-/ But if you can push past Quark and co…you’ll come (esp 2nd season onward) to the richest storytelling and acting of all the Trek series.

p.s. I’ve often wondered what Lucas’ fiance (Mellody Hobson) had to say to him about Ju-J…I mean Jar Jar.

    • Jonathan (the other one) says:

Reg, in my experience, “Trekkers” are people too insecure in their fandom to enjoy being called “Trekkies”. I’m a Trekkie, and have been since around the age of 5 or so (it went off the air when I was six, but I got to see it again in reruns starting in the early ’70s). :)

      Long life and prosperity!

At last I’m not alone in this reality. Some one else who agrees that Rogen was not now or ever will be what George W. Trendall envisioned when the he created the Green Hornet. And seeing Mythbusters special it was even less than digestible. And no way in Hell can Edward James Olomos be Mike Axford

  8. sparkletoes says:

The only problem now is you’ve watched the very best of TOS first.

  9. Dave says:

Yes watch Dr Who especially the Tom baker years. I always liked the concepts in the show back then. Special effects…cardboard sets and a lot of production mistakes but some of the concepts are what made it all worth it. The new show is pretty appealing too there is just so much to see.
