  1. One of my favorite scene in To Kill A Mockingbird never made it to the film. Scout, Jem and Dill are watching a guy pee off the back of his porch; Jen and Dill are admiring his reach and arc, Scout has NO idea what they’re talking about.

I was sore tempted to catch the film in the theaters; I’d talked the family into Singing in the Rain and Frankenstein / Bride in past months, but I didn’t think The Kid would sit still for this one. It’s a film I will slow down and watch any time it’s on, as I did just a night or two ago. There’s so much going on in the film, stuff that you don’t catch unless you watch multiple times, or have it explained to you. The mad dog is a perfect example. You only realize later that Atticus is not only a fine lawyer, but the best shot in the county – the sheriff doesn’t trust himself to take out the dog humanely, and hands the rifle to Finch. He takes to dog out in one shot, hands the gun back, and walks off like nothing happened. No WONDER he was ready to stand down an angry mob of racists with only a book in his hands.

Harper Lee was so taken by the sight of Peck in costume, she almost burst out crying. When shooting was over, she gave him her fathers pocketwatch which he’d worn in court every day.
