Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

I love war movies, which doesn’t mean I love war. APOCALYPSE NOW, FULL METAL JACKET (which all the vets of Vietnam and other wars say is the closest to the truth) are two of my favorites. And SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. I also love WAR HORSE. And of the old war movies…certainly ALL QUIET’S ON THE WESTERN FRONT, and BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI.

I also like SINCE YOU WENT AWAY, Martha, and would also recommend MRS. MINIVER. There’s also SO PROUDLY WE HAIL, about the nurses on Corrigedor after the fall of the Phillipines.

On TV there’s TENKO, the Austrailian Broadcasting Company’s series about the women taken prisoner after the fall of Singapore in WW II. Harrowing and pulls no punches.

And of course THE WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE.

I also especially like TORA! TORA! TORA!, about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. I think it’s relevant today re: the attack on the consulate (no, it was not an embassy) in Benghazi, because it shows how the U.S. government fucked up back then. As I’ve said before, in war there are fuck-ups.
