“it must have taken him forever to find so many top-shelf Ditko stories from Charlton that were actually printed on-register.”

No kidding! Were Charleton’s printers blind or just drunk? Why would Charletion even accept such poor craftsmanship.

I went to the link and the description says “many never previously printed photos”. I have Strange and Stranger by Blake Bell and he only had about 3 photos of Ditko. I presume these are not the same ones? And anything in this book about Ditko’s studio collaboration with Eric Stanton?

George, stories about Charlton’s owners would fill a book. And then Joe Pesci would star in the movie version. Those presses were old — and I mean ancient — cereal box presses. They sold their wares (comics, puzzle books, etc) by the pound, not by the title.

I always thought they could have bound 3-D glasses in with those comics.

I didn’t go into the Stanton connection although I wanted to; I thought it would shift my focus into the whole “who created Spider-Man” mess. However, his daughter writes one of the essays and she has a LOT to say.

Interesting. I don’t recall Charlton comics as particularly plagued by out-of-register pages; i DO remember generally murky printing and those lettering-machine balloons…

Subtitle for this page: “And Politics Rather Beyond Reality”.

(Not that it ever bothered me – i could just skip “Mr A” and the like.

Finally got this book this week. It’s very good and the pictures of Ditko and Eric Stanton were a nice surprise.
I liked your essay too Mike.
