Men can’t write vampire stories? That would also be news to Fred Saberhagen, Steve Gerber and Marv Wolfman (among others)! Just how many women were well-known for vamprire books before Chelsea Quinn Yarbro and Anne Rice?

The conventional wisdom is always that it can only be done the way the last person successfully did it. “Clearly that mountain can never be climbed. I mean it can only ever be climbed on it’s north face. I mean everyone knows it can only be climbed on it’s south face.”

To be fair, there’s a lot of books which publishers have avoided because the stories didn’t fit in with what they were looking for which, when eventually published, turned out to be poorly selling crap. Similarly, there are a lot of books which were exactly what publishers were looking for which turned out to do very well.

I get what you’re saying and understand the frustration about publishers’ tunnel vision and unwillingness to expand their offerings. But the self-righteous/self-pitying “I’ll show them” tone isn’t necessary. You’ve been a professional writer long enough to understand how the game is played.

Apparently, Baen Books got a nasty letter accusing them of forcing a woman to use a male pseudonym because, obviously, a man couldn’t possibly have written the female protagonist of “Path of the Fury” so well.

Funny, I heard the same thing about the author of Baen\’s Honor Harrington books– had to be a woman writing those. They just hire an actor for signings.

And if you publish it under the name of Petra David? do you think they will find it out?

It’s on my order list, Peter! Can’t wait to read it!
