Either my math is really bad or yours is, Gerry.

You wrote, “It has been reported that “Since its inception, The Hero Initiative (Formerly known as A.C.T.O.R., A Commitment To Our Roots) has had the good fortune to grant over $500,000 to over 50 comic book veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today.” In contrast, if we were to signal out just Robert Downy, Jr. who is reported to have made $50,000,000 off of his role as Iron Man in the Avengers film and ask him to donate a mere one tenth of a percent of that salary to The Hero Initiative, he would match every penny they have ever spent to support comic creators in need.”

The last time I checked, this is the breakdown of percentages related to $50,000,000:
    10% of $50,000,000 = $5,000,000
    1% of $50,000,000 = $500,000
    1/10 of 1% (aka “one-tenth of 1%) of $50,000,000 = $50,000

So. Is my math wrong or is yours? Your last statement there says that one-tenth of a percent of Downey’s $50,000,000 would “match” what Hero Initiative has spent, which is a contradiction to the $500,000 figure you lead off with. Downey’s contributing “one-tenth of a percent” would only be one-tenth what the Hero Initiative has raised.

(Note: I’m not arguing with your overall commentary but you weaken your argument when your proposal’s figures are incorrect. Now, granted, Downey’s donating a mere one-tenth of a percent of that “Avengers” salary wouldn’t be turned down–in fact, if he donated it to me, I certainly wouldn’t turn it down–but I would certainly think twice about donating to or even supporting the Initiative if all they’d been able to contribute to needy creators over the past decade had been a mere $50,000. And, I’ve donated to Hero Initiative at HeroesCon when I’ve been able to go, and I’ve also bought a couple of the Hero Initiative projects.)

Also, just to nitpick, I think you meant “to single out” not “to signal out.”

Paragraphs are your friends. Feel free to use them.

    • Cristopher, the original post at CO2 Comics is paragraph friendly. Somehow those little breaths of fresh air got lost in the re-post here at Comicmix.

  3. Joseph, I stand corrected! Who would have thought that I was once a mathlete in junior high. I’m ashamed. Damn those decimals. But you make a big point about the difference a small percentage can make when you are dealing with the kinds of money that these films bring in. If creators were honored with fractions of that profit that might seem inconsequential it would make a big difference in the life of someone like Mr.Washington.

I will work on having the figures edited for future readers. Thank you.
