Martha Thomases: Chicks ‘n’ Pixs

Martha Thomases

Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

“Nobody is threatening to take away their precious sexist video games.”

Aye, there’s the rub. Even if you aren’t, even if Ms. Sarkeesian isn’t, yes, there are people saying this. Just as there are people saying that, for the good of Western Civilization, we need to get rid of Ellen DeGeneris and/or 17 oz bottles of soda.

Of course, the response only proves the point. Call for a boycott of the Kickstarter, maybe even use some colorful language. But as soon as you hack a site, you have proven that you are incapable of following the social compact and do not deserve the rights afforded you.

Yeah, the first thing that popped into my head was “Halo: Reach”, in which one of the Spartan supersoldiers in the squad is Kat, who is indeed a woman. Then I thought about how most of them got these cool heroic deaths (like Jorge, who throws you out of the Covenant corvette so you survive when he has to manually set off the bomb, or the squad leader, who flies a gunship into an enemy vehicle so you can get by). And I remember that Kat gets aced by a sniper shot out of nowhere, for no very good story-based reason. And I think, maybe I should try to dig up a few bucks to throw at this Kickstarter…
