  1. My favorite Sendak books were The Nutshell Library, the boxed set of Pierre, Alligators All Around, One Was Johnny, and Chicken Soup With Rice, all of which were incorporated into Really Rosie. Frankly, as a kid, the other books that everyone keeps mentioning, Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen, meant close to nothing to me. But I loved The Nutshell Library with a passion. As a preschooler, I desperately wanted someone to buy it for me as a present. But since I never told anyone that, it never happened. I should probably just go buy them for myself, one of these days.

Any Sendakians near Philly can give themselves a wonderful treat by stopping by the tiny Rosenbach Library and Museum.

Long story short: Nestled into two townhouses is an amazing little museum: One brother was an art dealer, one a collector of antique books. So you have some very nice art right up against an INSANE collection of books and manuscripts: Everything from Tenniel’s original Alice drawings to Bram Stoker’s notes for Dracula to handwritten manuscripts for Ulysses or Nickolas Nickleby and more … and Maurice Sendak was not only on the board of directors, he gave his entire collection of prewar Mickey Mousiana to the museum … as well as VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING HE EVER WROTE, DREW, OR PAINTED. Seriously.

It’s one of the hidden joys of my city as well as being nectar of the gods to any literature fresk.
