DENNIS O’NEIL: Ode To John Carter

Dennis O'Neil

Dennis O'Neil was born in 1939, the same year that Batman first appeared in Detective Comics. It was thus perhaps fated that he would be so closely associated with the character, writing and editing the Dark Knight for more than 30 years. He's been an editor at Marvel and DC Comics. In addition to Batman, he's worked on Spider-Man, Daredevil, Iron Man, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, the Question, The Shadow and more. O'Neil has won every major award in the industry. His prose novels have been New York Times bestsellers. Denny lives in Rockland County with his wife, Marifran.

It just so happens that I like Dick Tracy’s Dilemma. Ralph Byrd’s resemblance to Dick Tracy is uncanny. In “real” life, probably creepy. However, I prefer Dick Tracy Returns as it stars moviedom’s greatest villain, Charles Middleton, as the bad guy.

Speaking of Middleton, I’ll put the SFX in the Flash Gordon serials up against Star Wars any day. And Middleton’s Ming was the absolute greatest movie villain ever.

BTW, Middleton also played the prosecutor in the Marx Bros.’ Duck Soup.

What effect would seeing even a reel or two of a modern sci-fi film have on the minds of those who paid their money to see Dick Tracy’s Dilemma?

One gets used to the commonplace, no matter how wondrous. But in an attempt to recognize how amazing modern effects are, when watching something like Finding Nemo and it’s utterly astounding animation, I try to imagine what it would have been like to show it to Walt Disney in, say, 1935.
