  1. That’s a great story. I never carried more than one comic around for fear I’d lose and/or damage one.

I misjudged how long a car ride would be when I was about 12 and ended up reading an issue of West Coast Avengers three or four times out. Fortunately, we stopped at a gas station on our way home that had the first issue of the second volume of Ghost Rider. Man, was I excited.

    • Brandon,

The most excited I’ve ever been about getting a comic book was waiting all day for my step dad to bring me Spider-Man #100. I REALLY wanted that book but asking my father to do ANYthing was always iffy. There was a 90-10 chance that I would be disappointed.

Not this time-this time he delivered and I read that comic over and over until I feel asleep.

      • I know what you mean, except my dad DID encourage my comic reading…he could just never remember what I liked/read. Trying to be excited about DC-published toy tie-in comics was never easy when what I really wanted was Iron Man or Spider-Man!

I was the only kid I knew who read comics, except for Kenny Raffel. He was a few years older than me, but our parents were friends, so sometimes, we’d go to his house. And then I’d get to go up to his room and read his comics. I still have nightmares about a Dell horror comic with monster hands that came out of the sewers and ate people through holes in the palms.

    Brrrr…

    • Martha,

I never considered Gold Key or Dell ‘rea’l comics. They just seemed corny to me. I’ve always wondered if anyone else felt that way, now I know. ;-)

      • Hey, Gold Key published Magnus Robot Fighter and Turok, Son of Stone and those were some of the best comics of the 60s outside of the House of Ideas.

Martha, luv, I felt the same way. Dell more than Gold Key ‘cuz one of GK’s first titles was The Phantom, but still. The painted covers were pretty, but they weren’t “comics.” Who were they trying to fool?

But I really disliked their lettering policy: square balloons, neither captions nor balloons touch the panel borders.

OTOH, they had Russ Manning. Better still, Russ managed to get away with ignoring the lettering rules at GK. Oh, and they had Dan Spiegle. So it’s hard to actually dislike ’em.

Martha, I read every comic I could get my hands on! And I was the only one I knew reading them, too!

  3. Mike,

The David statue? Are you freakin kidding me???

    • Mike Gold says:

I’ve got a penis thing going this week. Look at my column today. And, yes, my penis is bigger than yours. Or, well, okay, the demon’s penis is bigger than David’s.

      I love being 12.

  4. That was a wonderful story. Thank you.
