MINDY NEWELL: Blocked!

Mindy Newell

These days Mindy Newell knows that if she could do it all over again she’d have gone to college for screenwriting and film editing. Instead she became a nurse to please her parents and pleasing your parents was what it was all about for nice Jewish girls who graduated from high school in 1971. But the creative larva was in her soul, and when the cocoon broke and the butterfly emerged, it flew to DC’s New Talent Showcase program. Under the auspices of legendary editors Karen Berger, Len Wein, Julius Schwartz, Paul Levitz, and ComicMix’s own Robert Greenberger, Mindy learned the craft and art of writing comics, including Tales Of The Legion, V, Legionnaires 3, Amethyst, Lois Lane: When It Rains God Is Crying, and numerous other comics, including a Superman story based on a dream Mindy had as a child. She also worked on Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg! and other independent comics. All this time Mindy continued to work as a nurse while being a single mom to her daughter Alixandra, until the late and dear Mark Gruenwald hired her as an assistant editor at Marvel, while writing stories of the Black Widow and Daredevil. She edited NFL Pro Action, a licensed kid’s magazine about football with the NFL until Marvel imploded in 1996. Returning to full-time nursing, she she also co-wrote a story for 2000 A.D. with her then-husband, British artist John Higgins. A few years ago Mike Gold called and asked her to join the team of columnists here at ComicMix, where her topics freely range from comics to pop culture to politics; she even wrote a piece about the great American thoroughbred Secretariat, which caused editor Mike to tell her that she had won the prize for the most off-topic column ever written ComicMix.

My sister and I first encountered Amethyst, Princess of the Gemworld comics in our orthodontists office in the late 80s. Since that’s my sister’s name– she thought the writer’s and artists had somehow heard about her.

And speaking of the House Republicans– What’s the difference between John Boehner and Ben Grimm? One is orange, angry and has a head as a hard as a rock. The other is a founding member of the Fantastic Four.

  2. Mindy Newell says:

LOL, Jess! Like that one a lot!!

Your sister’s name is Amethyst? How cool is that!!!!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The big players in the U.S. comic book industry may still be scratching their heads over the girl audience, Mindy, but thankfully, there are wonderful cartoonists with work showing up online and in “book” books — stories that meet that audience where it lives. Raina Telgemeier’s “Smile,” Audra Ann Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga’s “nemu*nemu” and Barry Deutsch’s “Hereville” come to mind immediately (and I’m leaving so many people out!).

Jess Wiley, if you ever see your orthodontist, thank him or her for putting Amethyst in the waiting room!

  5. Mindy Newell says:

Yes, I know, Dan. I just wonder if they’re reaching the younger audiences, that’s all.

Good to hear from you, btw!

  6. Jess Willey says:

    Mr. Mishkin:

Unfortunately that was years ago. He has long since retired. I think the secretary was just taking the family friendly titles out of her college bound son’s collection and putting them in his waiting room. I tend to think that mainly because most of what they had other than Amethyst were things like Archie, Jughead’s Time Police, Captain Carrot and the first two years or so of Power Pack and best of all a forgotten book called Blue Devil. Later on she got things book sales and yard sales. But yeah– that’s part of how I started reading comics. The worst part is– there are two teeth that no matter how much work they did and how painful it was, wouldn’t straighten out. So I just sort of stopped going.

  7. Dan Mishkin says:

Always good to talk to you too, Mindy. On the question of reaching a younger audience: in my role as a co-founder of Kids Read Comics (www.kidsreadcomics.org), I meet plenty of folks who are putting out comics that are doing just fine in book sales and/or reaching lots of eyeballs online. There are more and more kids’s comics out there (for preschoolers on up), and they’re being responded to.

  8. I was not aware that Esteban Maroto was “the late”, and now I am sad. I adore his work.

I have already collected most of the Amethyst issues for my niece, who is all of 3.5 weeks old. I am prepared, dammit ;)

    • Glenn Hauman says:

I\’m not sure that Esteban Marato IS dead– this is the first I\’ve heard of it, and I couldn\’t find confirmation anywhere. His web site says he\’s still taking commissions.

  9. A Olexan says:

Esteban Maroto is still alive & well, as of yesterday. I got a holiday email from him, so as far as I know, he’s (thankfully) still with us :)

Isabel’s a lucky girl. Amethyst was on my list of gift possibilities for my friend’s daughter, and I was utterly disappointed to find out that the maxi-series has yet to be collected, not even in Showcase format. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a complete set of the individual issues that fit within my Christmas budget.

  11. Mindy Newell says:

Glad to hear that Esteban is alive and well. I read that he had died on a website, only now I can’t remember which one!
