MARTHA THOMASES: More For The Gift-Giving Challenged

Martha Thomases

Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

I’m a huge Giffen fan as well– as I’ve aged I’ve become a bigger fan of his work with J.M. Dematteis. They are both very funny people. Somehow working together brings out the funniest stuff in both of them because their real goal is to make each other laugh.

Though if you’re really going to recommend funny stuff by really smart people– where is Sergio Aragones’s Funnies? Even with it’s lack of stories about a race of giant robotic fire breathing llamas attacking Newfoundland it is still the funniest comic on the stands hands down.

Jess, you’re right. I love Sergio.

Martha, I’ve mentioned this before, although I don’t think to you, but isn’t it amazing, and a sign of Howard’s talent, how precongnizant he was in foretelling an America run by corporations?

I did love American Flagg, btw. Did you know that I scripted a couple of–or three?–over Howard’s plots?

Mindy, I envy you. Scripting for Howard would intimidate me to no end.
