I still have the phone number for Upstarts in my Rolodex (ask your parents, children). We interviewed a bunch of the guys for HIGH TIMES just after Arthur was born. I still remember the way those guys cooed over our baby in the Snugli.

  2. I mention at the end of the article the late night talks I had with some of the Upstart crew. I didn’t mention what may have been one of the best late night ‘I’ve had to much cherry Coke’ talks I’ve ever had.

It was late I was in the studio alone and needed a Cherry Coke fix. Walt was working on Thor next door at Upstart and I stopped by to see if he wanted something.

When I got back from the store, I never made it back to my studio. Walt and I talked until we both left for home in the wee hours of the morning. I have a horrible memory sometimes but I will NEVER forget that evening.

Yay! Wasteland! One of the most completely overlooked and underrated comics of my youth.

    • It was overlooked because I worked on it.

All jokes aside, that book was one of the best written books ever.

      • Shane Kelly says:

LMAO! I actually didn’t even realize that you worked on the book til I read this.

I could not agree more about the writing. One of the main appealing aspects of it was the anthology of it, and well executed, self contained stories that could be fun, humorous, heroic, psychological, creepy, etc.

In addendum to that, was the vastly different variations of the art (looking at you MOTU) that tied into the appropriate feel for each of those great stories edited brilliantly (looking at you Mike Gold).

The cherry on top was the impeccable writing skills of John Ostrander and the sheer insanity of Del Close.

  4. John is STILL one of my favorite writers.

    • He’s one of mine, too, along with Tim Truman (why didn’t Dark Horse get HIM to write Turok? :( ). I even have a Grimjack tattoo, commemorating my respect and affinity for them both.
